  • A surging J.C. Penney to re-enter category it left 30 years ago

    As more millennials enter the real estate market and a rising number of homeowners invest in updating their homes, J.C. Penney is re-entering the appliance business.

    The retailer announced that it will introduce a leading assortment of major appliances in 22 pilot stores beginning Feb. 1. Backed by customer research that reinforces the company’s decision to enter the appliance market, the pilot is one of several strategic initiatives aimed at improving its home department sales productivity, the company said.

  • Cash still king for many consumers

    Even in today’s expanding market of digital payment options, cash remains a leading payment form.

    That’s according to a survey of over 1,000 consumers by Cardtronics. It shows that in spite of people having access to and using a greater variety of payment methods, cash remains widely used and frequently selected for making all sorts of payments.

  • Former RadioShack CEO, Walgreens exec to lead Massage Envy

    Massage Envy, a subscription-based massage and skincare services provider, on Monday named Joseph Magnacca as CEO, succeeding Dave Crisalli who will continue to serve the business as a member of its board.

    Magnacca most recently served as CEO of RadioShack. Prior to that he was executive VP and president of Daily Living Products and Solutions for Walgreen Co., where he oversaw all of Walgreen's marketing and merchandising operations across more than 8,000 stores.

  • Pei Wei expands presence in Florida

    Winter Garden, Fla. -- The Sembler Company has completed construction on the final outparcel at the 1.15 million sq. ft. Winter Garden Village located in Winter Garden, Florida.

    Pei Wei Asian Diner and Mattress One will occupy the new 7,200-sq. ft. building, marking complete build-out of the development originally started in 2006.

  • NRF: Holiday sales fall short of forecast

    The National Retail Federation confirmed what many retailers already knew and made a downward revision to a holiday forecast that initially called for 3.7% growth.

    Citing what it called “unforeseen events,” the National Retail Federation (NRF) said sales during November and December increased 3% to $626 billion, down from an earlier forecast which envisioned growth of 3.7%.

    This year's Ikea Foundation Soft Toys for Education campaign, which ran from Nov. 1 through Dec. 26, raised over $1.4 million in the U.S. alone through soft toys, Ikea Family children's books and card games sales.

  • Torrid model search goes omnichannel

    Plus-size fashion retailer Torrid has a new model to showcase in its latest omnichannel marketing campaign.

    The company has announced the winner of its model search: Lyanna Lynette. The 26-year-old Southern beauty was revealed in a 12-episode Web series on YouTube. The first of its kind in plus-size fashion, the series follows the four finalists as they compete to become the Face of Torrid 2016. The series can be watched, in full, on Torrid's YouTube channel.
