  • Nordstrom Rack headed to downtown LA

    Nordstrom Rack is going to set up shop in a rapidly expanding area of Los Angles.    The retailer will open an approximately 27,000-sq.-st. store in fall 2017 at FIGat7th, an open-air center in the heart of downtown Los Angeles (DTLA) owned and operated by Brookfield Property Partners L.P.   The new Nordstrom Rack will join Target, H&M, Victoria's Secret, MAC and other retailers and restaurants at the center, which located at 7th & Figueroa Street.  
  • NRF: Shoppers pulling back on Valentine’s Day spending

    After a decade-long increase, Valentine’s Day sales may be less rosy this year.   U.S. consumers are expected to spend an average $136.57, down from last year’s record-high $146.84. Total spending is expected to reach $18.2 billion, down from $19.7 billion last year, which was also a record, according to the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics, which surveyed 7,591 consumers about their Valentine’s Day plans.  
  • Pinterest expands ‘search advertising’

    Pinterest is taking its search program to the next level.   The social media site now offers Search Ads, a feature that enables retailers to run ads as “pinners” type keywords into the search bar. The program, which started as a limited test, is now comprised of a full suite of features, including keyword and shopping campaigns that are shown in search results, as well as new targeting and reporting options, Pinterest’s head of global sales, Jon Kaplan, said in the company’s blog.  
  • CSA opens up nominations for ‘10 under 40’ in retail real estate

    Chain Store Age has launched our annual search for 10 individuals in retail real estate we call “retail stars;” all will be featured in the May 2017 issue of CSA with bonus distribution at the International Council of Shopping Centers’ RECon event in Las Vegas!     The award recognizes people under the age of 40 who are making an impact in retail real estate – whether from the tenant (retail) or the landlord (shopping center company) side.  
  • 1-800-Flowers.com misses Q2 expectations

    Despite a profitable second quarter, 1-800-Flowers.com fell short of expectations.   The company reported a 1.1% revenue growth to $554.6 million for the quarter ending Jan. 1, from $548.4 million the previous year. The company credited its 1-800-Flowers.com and BloomNet segments for the increase, along with modest growth in its Gourmet Food and Gift Baskets segment, and e-commerce growth across the Harry & David, Cheryl’s, The Popcorn Factory and 1-800-Baskets brands, the company said.  
  • Athleta debuts its first Fair Trade Certified styles

    Athleta’s latest line will provide a premium to the female workforce that created it.   The athleisure brand’s spring collection was manufactured in a factory certified by Fair Trade USA, an organization dedicated to creating social and economic opportunities for factory workers globally. For a product to earn Fair Trade certification, it must originate from a facility that operates according to the rigorous social, environmental and economic standards set in place by Fair Trade USA.   
  • Consumer Reviews: How to Avoid Legal, PR Headaches

    According to a 2015 Nielsen study, two-thirds of consumers trust consumer opinions over company advertising and rely on peer review sites for insights and advice. However, these sites can cause huge headaches for well-intentioned retailers that incentivize consumers to post glowing reviews or find themselves on the wrong side of a revenge or competitor-sponsored post. When not conducted correctly, these efforts can harm brands and further consumer mistrust.   
  • Report: Personalization, price and fulfillment influence most omnichannel shoppers

    Consumers have increasingly high expectations for a unified shopping and brand experience across all purchasing channels and touchpoints.   Retailers that can address their demand for more personalization, price, and fulfillment along the path to purchase will be the winners going forward, according to the “Consumer Trends Report — 2017 Edition,” from Kibo. The study is based on responses from more than 3,000 consumers in the United States and the United Kingdom.
