  • Report: Another sporting goods retailer eyeing Chapter 11

    The sporting goods industry could be facing another major retail bankruptcy filing.

    Vestis Retail Group, parent company of Eastern Mountain Sports, Sport Chalet and Bob’s Stores is preparing to file for Chapter 11 protection, according to Bloomberg.

    Vestis Retail Group, which is owned by private equity firm Versa Capital Management LLC, could file as soon as next week, the report said.

  • Accessories retailer names new head of marketing

    Charming Charlie has appointed Ujjwal Dhoot as VP of marketing, based in the specialty retailer’s Los Angeles office.

    Dhoot previously served as chief marketing officer for FSAStore.com, responsible for the overall growth strategy, customer acquisition and retention, analytics development and testing for the FSA-eligible products and services shop. Before that, he was VP of marketing at 20x200, an online retailer for limited edition art.

    Dhoot also served as VP of marketing at PetCareRx.com.

  • Department store giant continues to expand outlet store formats

    Macy’s announced it will open a new Bloomingdale's Outlet store in November 2016 at The Outlets at Orange, in Orange, California.

    The 24,000-sq.-ft. store will be the 17th Bloomingdale's Outlet location and offer a range of off-price apparel and accessories for men, women and children.

  • Timberland expands in London with sixth location

    A cobbler station and lace customization are key elements of Timberland’s newest store in London.

    The new 1,000-sq.-ft. location on Oxford Street, one of London’s busiest shopping streets, will stock footwear and accessories for men, women and kids. The opening gives Timberland, a VF Corp. brand, six locations in London. It is part of a move by Timberland to connect with a wider audience and younger consumers on the brand’s quest to become the largest and most sustainable lifestyle brand on Earth, according to the company.

  • Sales at Claire's fall in Q4

    Claire's Stores blamed currency exchange rates and store cloures for its decrease in revenue in the fourth quarter.

    The specialty retailer said that for the period ended Jan. 30, net sales were $402.6 million, a decrease of $9.8 million, or 2.4% compared to the fiscal 2014 fourth quarter. The company said the decrease was attributable to an unfavorable foreign currency translation effect of non-U.S. net sales, the effect of store closures, decreased shipments to franchisees and a 0.2% decrease in same-store sales.

  • Report: Urban Outfitters going bigger with Anthropologie

    Urban Outfitters is going against the smaller-is-better footprint trend and experimenting with larger-sized stores for its Anthropologie brand.

    The retailer is testing four “ultimate experience” Anthropologie stores, ranging in size from 20,000 sq. ft. to 30,000 sq. ft., Women’s Wear Daily reported.

    Anthropologie is offering customers what it calls the “ultimate Anthropologie experience” at its expanded store in Portland, Oregon.

    The 25,000-plus-sq.ft. space features, among other things, 12 full-scale living, dining and bedroom settings, a home design center complete with stylists. and limited edition capsule collections.

    It also features an extensive shoe selection with more than 300 styles, 800-plus bath, body and beauty items and an expanded selection of activewear.
