  • Safeway, Wegman's beat out Walmart, others for service

    TORONTO — Safeway and Wegman’s Food Markets ranked highest across all customer service elements, according to a survey by Empathica.

    Empathica, a customer experience management solution-provider, polled more than 16,000 consumers, and found that operations and merchandise were the two most important elements in grocery shopping versus other elements such as promotions, people and technology.

    Toronto, Ontario, Canada -- Safeway and Wegman’s Food Markets ranked highest across all customer service elements, according to a survey by Empathica.

  • Romo Italian Designers to open at Crossing Shopping Village

    Miami Beach, Fla. -- Terranova Corp. said that men’s fashion retailer Romo Italian Designers will open a 1,020-sq.-ft. store at the Crossing Shopping Village, in Miami.

    The location is a first for the retailer under the Romo Italian Designers banner. The store is slated to open by the end of August. 

    The Crossings Shopping Village is anchored by Publix, and tenanted by CVS, Blockbuster Video and Chicken Kitchen.
     

  • Publix to anchor Boynton Lakes Plaza redevelopment

    Boynton Beach, Fla. -- Jacksonville, Fla.-based Regency Centers announced the addition of Publix Super Market as the new anchor of Boynton Lakes Plaza, a 117,000-sq.-ft. neighborhood center in Boynton Beach, Fla. 

    Publix is relocating from an undersized 39,000-sq.-ft. store in a nearby center to open a new prototype of 45,600 sq. ft. in late summer 2012.   

    The store will occupy a former Winn-Dixie site that was closed along with 29 other locations in July 2010.
     

  • A fresh new focus at Winn-Dixie

    APOPKA, Fla. – Winn-Dixie announced the opening of the first of several remodeled stores in Central Florida Wednesday as the company looks to reposition itself as the grocery destination in the area.

    The store, located in Errol Plaza, is one of 17 planned store remodels. The company expects to invest approximately $5.5 million per store.

  • Publix stock rises on strong quarter

    LAKELAND, Fla. — Investors will wish even harder that Publix would go public, now that the company has reported strong quarterly results and a jump in its private stock price.

    Publix, which is not publicly-traded company, said that its stock price rose from $21.65 per share to $22.05 per share, effective Aug. 1. The stock is only available to current Publix associates and members of its board of directors.

    The existence of hunger in America and the concept of food deserts are hard for most Americans to grasp. Simple observations suggests that the majority of us are not missing many meals and grocery stores are so prevalent that profitably operating a food store is a perpetual challenge because of intense competition and the resulting pricing pressure.
