    BENTONVILLE, Ark. — To celebrate Men's Health Month, Sam's Club is offering free men's health screening tests this weekend at select stores, which will be sponsored by Unilever brands, including Dove Men's deodorant and body wash.

  • May sales for Fred's rise as comps fall short

    MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fred's on Thursday reported sales of $143.5 million for the four weeks ended May 28, up 1%. Comparable-store sales for the month rose 0.2%, compared with an increase of 3.5% in the same period last year.

  • Luxury leads the way in May

     NEW YORK  — A sluggish economy, cool weather and high prices at the pump tempered retail sales in May, as retailers reported mixed results for the month. Retail Metrics projected an increase of 5.1% for the 25 chains tracked, which would mark the 21st straight monthly gain from September 2009.

    Retailers who turned in strong performances in May included Macy’s, with a 7.4% rise in same-store sales when a 5.6% increase was expected. The company lifted its full-year same-stores sales estimate.

  • MasterCard Spending Pulse: Luxury, jewelry and e-commerce enjoy strong gains in May

    New York City -- Luxury, high-end jewelry and e-commerce enjoyed strong growth in May, as did the restaurant category, according to MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse, which tracks national retail and services sales. Apparel also continued to show gains, the report found, while housing-related sectors such as furniture, electronics and appliances all saw sales decline compared with the same period in 2010.

  • Survey: Father’s Day spending up

    Washington, D.C. -- Consumers are predicted to spend an average of $106.49 on Father’s Day spending this year, up from $94.32 last year, according to the National Retail Federation’s Consumer Intentions and Actions Father’s Day survey. It is the highest in the eight years the survey has been conducted.

    HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — Sears announced that it has created a list of perfect Father's Day gifts with the help of its mySears community and Facebook fans. The company polled its consumers and yielded more than 700 responses to determine the ultimate "Gift Guy'd," the company reported.

    Midwestern department store operator Gordman’s Stores was putting up some big numbers last year, and then in early August it decided to go public. Things are not looking quite as good of late, with first quarter comps weaker than planned and guidance for the remainder of the year lowered.
