  • Report: Luxury retailers and discounters most likely to expand

    New York — Backed by an improving economy, a recent surge in jobs and ten consecutive months of rising retail sales, a broad range of retailers are poised to fill up empty retail spaces over the next 12 to 18 months, according to Colliers International,  the third-largest commercial real estate services company in the world.

  • Books-A-Million swings to Q1 loss on declining sales

    Birmingham, Ala. — Books-A-Million Inc. on Tuesday reported a first-quarter loss as revenue fell 11.1% in the face of growing competition from digital books. The chain posted a first-quarter loss of $3.5 million, compared with net income of $2 million.

    Quarterly revenue dropped to $104 million from $117 million, a year earlier. Same-store sales fell 13.2%.

  • Cars 2 races into Toys"R"Us

    WAYNE, N.J. — Toys"R"Us announced that it will open Cars 2-inspired “racetrack” boutiques in nearly 1,300 toy stores across the globe in time for the June 24 release of the feature film.

    The company is opening the in-store boutiques in the United States on June 1 and will open additional boutiques internationally to coincide with the movie's release in each respective country. Toys"R"Us has also launched a dedicated Cars 2 website at Toysrus.com/Cars2.

  • Kaplan Thaler Group named Supervalu's agency of record

    NEW YORK — Creative agency Kaplan Thaler Group has been tapped to run Supervalu’s latest ad campaign, according to a blog posted on the Kaplan Thaler Group site Monday.

    As lead creative agency, the Kaplan Thaler Group’s responsibilities will encompass advertising, digital and direct marketing across all Supervalu banners — including Acme, Albertsons, Cub Foods, Farm Fresh, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s/Star Market, Shop ‘n Save, Shoppers Food & Pharmacy, Hornbacher’s and Save-A-Lot.

  • Disney Store celebrates 25 years with new and remodeled stores

    Pasadena, Calif. — Disney Store plans to open its interactive concept stores in more than 40 locations in 2011 the company announced today at the Global Retail Real Estate Convention in Las Vegas.  The company said that by the end of 2011, it will have 60 new concept stores in 16 major markets in North America and eight countries.

  • Gas prices put pressure on consumers

    WASHINGTON — An Associated Press/GfK poll released Friday determined that rising gas prices will cause “serious” hardship for as much as 41% of Americans.

    Almost 3-in-4 adults acknowledged that $4 per gallon or more at the pump will at least cause some hardship.

  • Bon Ton’s Q1 loss widens

    York, Pa. -- Bon-Ton Stores said Thursday that its first-quarter loss grew as it booked hefty debt-related charges and sales declined almost 2%. Management blamed unseasonably cold and wet weather for weak sales of seasonal apparel, which forced the retailer to take markdowns and other adjustments.

    The company reported a loss of $36 million for the three months ended April 30, compared with a loss of $23.5 million in the same period last year.
