  • Graduation spending to hit record high

    Some good news for retailers: Consumers plan to spend more than ever on graduation gifts this year as they stuff greeting cards with gift cards and cash.   That’s according to the annual survey by the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics. With more consumers buying for graduates this year – 36% compared with 34% in 2016 – total spending is expected to reach $5.6 billion. That’s the highest number in the survey’s 11-year history, topping last year’s previous record of $5.4 billion.

  • Report: Online growth continues at blistering pace

    Online retailing is on an upward trajectory that shows no sign of slowing.   In fact, the segment is expected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of close to 16% between 2017-2021, according to a research forecast from Technavio.

    Party City on Tuesday announced earnings and revenue that topped expectations, and said it would launch an online marketplace for party services.  
  • Gifting retailer’s Q3 revenues slip

    While sales across floral divisions were strong, a late Easter impacted 1-800-Flowers.com’s third quarter revenues.    For the quarter ended April 2, 2017, revenues were $233.7 million, a slight dip compared to $234.2 million in the prior year period. This reflects lower year-over-year profits across the Gourmet Food and Gift Baskets divisions due to the Easter holiday shifting into the company’s fiscal fourth quarter this year.  
  • Crayola Experience heading to Texas

    The Lone Star state is set to get a big dose of Crayola color.    The iconic brand will open a Crayola Experience at The Shops at Willow Bend, Plano, Texas, in spring 2018. This is the fourth location for the attraction, which also has locations in Orlando, Fla., Bloomington, Minn. (at Mall of America), and its hometown of Easton, Pa.      
  • Tractor Supply is weather-challenged in Q1

    Tractor Supply Company reported declines in first quarter comp-store sales and net income as mild weather reduced sales of winter products.    "Due to the challenging weather conditions, we were unable to offset the strong seasonal performance from last year's first quarter," said CEO Greg Sandfort. "As the weather has normalized over the past few weeks, we are encouraged with how the customer has responded and believe there is significant spring business ahead of us."  
  • NRF: Mother’s Day spending to reach record-high

    Whether treating mom to jewelry or a special outing at her favorite restaurant, consumers plan to spend more than ever on Mother’s Day.   Specifically, Mother’s Day shoppers are expected to spend an average of $186.39 for the holiday, up from last year’s $172.22, according to the National Retail Federation’s annual survey, which tapped 7,406 consumers about their Mother’s Day plans. The study was conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics.
