    When Samsung Electronics America opened the doors to Samsung 837 in the heart of New York City, it unveiled a digital playground that personifies the evolution — and future — of retail. The store will be the focus of a session at Chain Store Age’s upcoming SPECS conference (March 12-14, at the Gaylord Palms, Kissimmee, Florida).      
  • Pay with Amazon volume nearly doubled in 2016

    More customers are making digital payments through Pay with Amazon.   In 2016, more than 33 million customers have used Amazon Payments to make a purchase, according to the retailer.  
  • Study: Online food shopping set to explode

    Within the next decade, online food shopping will reach maturation in the U.S., far faster than other industries that have come online before.   At least that’s according to the “Digitally Engaged Food Shopper,” a report from the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) and Nielsen that takes a comprehensive look into the behaviors, motivations and expectations of the digitally-engaged food shopper.   
  • Warby Parker in store expansion

    Warby Parker is making a big commitment to brick-and-mortar.    The hip eyewear retailer plans to open at least 25 stores this year, The Wall Street Journal reported.   The new locations, planned for Miami, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and other cities, are expected to bring Warby Parker’s total store count to about 70 by year end.    The stores will range in size and include freestanding as well as mall locations, the report said.

    While it missed some analysts’ aggressive $44.7 billion quarterly revenue estimate, Amazon continues to record solid growth. Fourth-quarter sales were up 22% year over year to $43.7 billion. The retailer also maintained profitability throughout 2016, indicating that the flywheel continues to accelerate, especially in North America.

    Mobility’s influence on retail sales has never been stronger. Too bad the same can’t be said for its impact on conversions.   I know what you are thinking — the industry had a stellar holiday shopping season, and it was driven by mobile. Indeed, the 2016 holiday season brought in a total $91.7 billion in online sales, an 11% increase year-over-year. Mobile alone brought in a total of $28.43 billion in revenue, a 23% increase over last year, according to Adobe.   
  • Mall of America adds to experiential lineup

    This summer, Mall of America will buy into the escape fantasy craze with the addition of The Escape Game, an hour-long experience that the Nashville-based provider of the technology says presents sophisticated content designed to challenge even the most ardent gamers.   In the group experience, players can choose adventures that include a Mars mission, a covert mission to intervene with terrorists, a prison break, and a museum heist. The 3,300-sq.-ft. space will be located on level 3 of the huge mall in Bloomington, Minnesota, near Sears.
