  • First look: Adobe says digital trends look good for Mother’s Day

    Online consumers appear to be remembering Mom this year.

    According to new data from the Adobe Digital Index, online sales in the important Mother’s Day gift categories of flowers/gifts and jewelry are both trending 2%-3% higher than they were in 2015.

  • Beauty retailer expands management team

    Birchbox has added two new executives to enhance the customer experience, hiring VPs in product management and creative.

    Terre Layton was named global VP of product management and user experience, responsible for global product management, the product strategy and roadmap, and the user experience. She most recently worked at Sephora, where she served as head of front-end product management and led strategic digital innovation projects. She has also consulted for several beauty retailers and e-commerce companies.

  • California puts crimp in Costco in April

    Slow traffic at its California stores proved a drag for Costco Wholesale Corp. in April.

    The retailer reported flat same-store sales in April, below analysts’ estimates of a 1.2% increase.

    Total sales in April rose 3% to $8.98 billion, helped by strength in Canada.

    Excluding gasoline-price fluctuations and currency exchange rates, U.S. same-store sales rose 2%, below estimates for growth of 3.4%. Same-store sales in Canada increased 2% overall and 7% when excluding gas prices and currency.

  • Amazon expands reach of Prime Now to the Web

    Amazon.com is making its Prime Now on-demand delivery service more accessible, but is not adding new markets.

    Following several weeks of media speculation, Amazon has made the formerly smartphone app-only Prime Now available as a page on its e-commerce site. Members of the paid Amazon Prime loyalty program in one of the 27 metro areas where Prime Now is available can place orders for one- or two-hour delivery.

  • Study: Women embrace modern shopping technology, but one demand remains constant

    Well informed. Well connected. Price sensitive.

    Those three terms sum up the modern American female consumer, according to a new study from Blackhawk Engagement Solutions, which reveals that that price holds the most weight (75%) when it comes to influencing a purchase, followed by quality (55%). Other factors affecting women’s purchase decisions include brand (31%), store (26%) and availability (14%).

  • Personalization is all in the wrist at True Religion

    True Religion Apparel Inc. is enabling store associates to provide a highly personalized customer experience with a glance at their watch.

    The specialty apparel retailer is partnering with Aptos Inc. (formerly Epicor Retail) and Formula 3 Group to enhance and extend the functionality of its associate-facing Apple Watch “Band” app. Originally released in December 2015, Band offers real-time access to the retailer’s full inventory selection from the store, along with intuitive search capability.

  • Study: Bad odors, dirty restrooms among top five store turn-offs

    Retailers who fail to maintain a clean, well-maintained store are putting themselves at a strong competitive disadvantage.

    That’s the takeaway from a new survey conducted by Harris Poll for the Cintas Corp., which found that 93% of U.S. adults would not return to a retailer if they experienced some type of issue related to the facility. The top five factors that would turn patrons away from a store were:

    • General bad odor – 78%
    • Dirty restrooms (e.g., floors, stalls, mirrors, odor) – 66%
