  • Report: Fraud, risk incidents rise in 2016

    Fraud, cyber and security incidents escalated in 2016.   That’s according to the “Kroll Annual Global Fraud and Risk Report,” which surveyed executives worldwide across multiple industries and geographies. The study noted that 82% of the respondents experienced a fraud incident in the past year compared to 75% in 2015.  
  • Study: Omnichannel moves beyond initiative stages to execution

    The omnichannel evolution has begun — and more retailers are adopting the business strategy to better meet shoppers’ needs.   That’s according to “Retail Insight: Moving Beyond Omnichannel,” a report from SPS Commerce and conducted by Retail Systems Research. The study, which is based on responses from more than 500 retailers, suppliers and logistics firms worldwide, said that more than 35% of retailers are on track with their omnichannel execution, up nearly 200% year-over-year.  
  • Department store chain taps exec to head up tech center in India

    J.C. Penney is shoring up its commitment to its new technology lab in Bangalore, India.   The chain has tapped Snehil Gambhir as VP and managing director of its global in-house center (GIC). Tasked with leading all operations at the company’s GIC, he will support and expand a variety of key business functions, including IT, digital, store operations, analytics, marketing, infrastructure and merchandise operations.  
  • Microsoft taps LinkedIn exec to head up tech

    Kevin Scott is joining Microsoft in the newly created role of chief technology officer (CTO).   Scott most recently served senior VP of infrastructure at LinkedIn, which Microsoft purchased in June for $26 billion.   
  • Century-old hardware retailer rejuvenates operations

    Besser Ace Hardware may be Arkansas's oldest hardware store, but modernized technology is making it more customer friendly.   The retailer, which was established in 1887, has served the downtown Little Rock community in its current location since the 1960’s. When the operator embarked on a complete remodel however, it was time to replace its previous point-of-sale system with robust software.  
  • Home decor brand’s sales data reveals most enthusiastic NFL fans

    Wayfair has tapped into analytics with an unusual goal: to rank its most enthusiastic football fans ahead of the Super Bowl.    By using analytics to tap sales data of its NFL merchandise, Wayfair pinpointed its most enthusiastic team fan bases — and where they reside. The online retailer’s results are based on overall sales of licensed merchandise sold on its NFL Fan Shop during the 2016-2017 NFL season (Sept. 8, 2016-Jan. 15, 2017).  
  • Alibaba throws hat into the Olympics sponsorship ring

    What better place is there for global exposure than the Olympic Games?   At least, that is what Alibaba is counting on now that it struck a deal to become a top sponsor of the Olympic Games through 2028. The sponsorship, which is worth $800 million, pits the brand among giants like Coca Cola Co. and Samsung Electronics Co., according to Bloomberg.  
  • Study: Online shoppers not always ready to buy

    While the path-to-purchase often starts online, a majority of interactions with a brand's website do not end in conversion.   In fact, 92% of consumers’ initial visit to a brand's website doesn’t lead to a sale, according to “Reimaging Commerce,” a study from Episerver. The study tapped more than 1,100 consumers to learn the importance of relevant and engaging content throughout the purchase journey.  
  • C-suite tech moves at Nordstrom

    Nordstrom is realigning and streamlining its top technology positions.    The company said that Dan Little, Nordstrom’s chief information officer, plans to retire next fall. Little joined Nordstrom in 2002, as VP, supply chain strategy. He was named to his current position in 2014.  
  • Report: Retailers lag in digital transformation

    Nearly half of retailer leaders will be out of business if they don’t transform themselves digitally.   This is according to “Reinventing Retail: Cisco Reveals How Stores Can Surge Ahead on the Digital Transformation Journey,” a study based on data from 200 retail executives from North and South America and regions of Europe. Companies represent brick-and-mortar retailers, e-commerce, apparel manufacturers, food service and other segments of retail.
