    As 2017 gets underway, digital disruption continues to drive — and transform — the industry.

    Besides creating a more consumer-centric, web-enabled shopping experience, digital innovations — from the Internet of Things to mobility to social media — are altering retail operations. They are also generating new challenges that retailers are unaccustomed to, or worse, still unprepared for.

  • Salesforce: 2016 most ‘digitally-influenced’ holiday shopping season ever

    Digital commerce stole the show during the 2016 holiday shopping season, and mobile and social had the biggest impact on shoppers.   That’s according to data from Salesforce Commerce Cloud, which reports digital commerce was up 34%  globally over last holiday — well surpassing last year’s 24% growth rate.  
  • Instagram hits 600 million members

    Instagram’s rapid growth should be music to retailer’s ears.   The Facebook-owned photo and video sharing app has hit 600 million monthly active users, a 100 million user jump in the last six months, according to Recode.   
  • Ikea: No more store sleepovers

    Ikea stores are so inviting that some teens want to spend the night.   Ten of the Swedish home furnishing giant’s stores across the world have been the location of illegal sleepovers, BBC News reported.   
  • Luxury brands grab online holiday shoppers through digital disruptors

    Upscale brands are grabbing the attention of holiday procrastinators.   Three in 10 shoppers are still scrambling to finish holiday shopping, according to the National Retail Federation, and many are jumping online in search of their perfect, albeit “last minute” holiday gifts.

  • Pew Research: Cost is key factor when it comes to shopping online vs. in store

    A vast majority of Americans now buy online, but that doesn’t mean it is their favorite way to shop.    Approximately eight-in-ten Americans are now online shoppers: 79% have made an online purchase of any type, while 51% have bought something using a cellphone and 15% have made purchases by following a link from social media sites, according to the Pew Research Center.
