  • Sales at Claire's fall in Q4

    Claire's Stores blamed currency exchange rates and store cloures for its decrease in revenue in the fourth quarter.

    The specialty retailer said that for the period ended Jan. 30, net sales were $402.6 million, a decrease of $9.8 million, or 2.4% compared to the fiscal 2014 fourth quarter. The company said the decrease was attributable to an unfavorable foreign currency translation effect of non-U.S. net sales, the effect of store closures, decreased shipments to franchisees and a 0.2% decrease in same-store sales.

  • Ron Johnson’s Enjoy expanding

    The nearly one-year-old online retail startup from Ron Johnson is expanding into new markets.

    Enjoy, which sells higher-end consumer electronics that trained experts hand deliver and provide training for at no additional charge, has added Los Angeles to its delivery area. Its next market will be Chicago.

    The company already services San Francisco and New York City.

  • Petco adds new leadership to accelerate growth plans

    Petco has added two key leaders to its executive ranks and expanded the role of its supply chain chief.

    The company announced that it has hired Jodi Watson as senior VP, Petco Direct, and Spencer Insolia as VP, Petco and president, Doctors Foster & Smith. The company has also named John Carcasi as senior VP, supply chain & merchandise planning, expanding his previous role to encompass all supply chain and inventory related activity across the company.

  • Hot brand opening pop-ups in hotels

    One of the most buzzed-about retail brands is setting up shop — temporarily — in some hip hotels.

    Canadian apparel retailer Kit and Ace is opening a a series of pop-ups in collaboration with luxury hotels in major cities across the globe. The pop-up, called “The Carry-on,” will make its debut in April, at the Hotel Zetta in San Francisco (for full listing, see end of article). It will offer a selection of easy-pack, carry-on essentials from Kit and Ace.

  • Ross Dress for Less expands in Virginia

    Ross Dress for Less opened a new store in Woodbridge, Virginia, on March 5.

    The 25,000=sq.-ft. store is located in Prince William Square, on the northwest corner of Smoketown Road and Gideon Drive, 20 miles southwest of Washington, D.C.

    The opening is part of Ross’ 2016 expansion program, totaling about 70 new locations during the year.

  • Instacart in big expansion

    Online delivery service Instacart is launching its first expansion of 2016 – and it’s a big one.

    Instacart is now offering deliveries in as little as one hour from Whole Foods Market, Gelson’s Market, Stater Bros. Markets, Ralphs, Smart & Final, Costco (no membership needed), Petco, and H Mart to residents of Orange County, California. Whole Foods will offer delivery via Instacart at prices that are the same as shoppers find in-stores.

  • Ex-Walmart, Sears exec joins Conn's board

    Conn's is adding two independent directors with deep retail expertise to its board.

    The company announced that James Haworth and Oded Shein have been appointed as independent directors.

    “Jim and Oded are proven leaders with more than a half century of combined retail experience,” said Theodore M. Wright, non-executive chairman of the board, Conn’s. “They add even greater depth to our Board as we continue implementing Conn’s strategic plan.”
