  • Up Close: Shoppers review the next-generation Apple store

    Sleek. Minimalist. Innovative. Modern.

    Those were among the words used most often by mystery shoppers to describe Apple’s next-generation store, located at Shops of Saddle Creek South in Germantown, Tennessee, a suburb of Memphis.

    The shoppers are part of Field Agent, which provides on-location auditing and research via a network of 650,000 “agents” who collect data that can be monitored in real time by its clients. The company deployed several agents to visit and then review the store. The majority of the comments were glowing:

  • Kroger partnership may provide healthy boost

    The Kroger Co. is making a “meaningful” investment in specialty natural/organic grocery chain Lucky’s Market that could expand the supermarket giant’s product assortment.

    Kroger did not disclose the size of its stake in Lucky’s, which is based in Boulder, Colorado, and operates 17 stores in 13 states throughout the Midwest and Southeast U.S. Lucky’s stores average 30,000-sq.-ft. and are laid out to resemble an indoor farmers market, and also offer an assortment of prepared foods.

    Online fashion site Revolve has entered the world of physical retail with what the brand describes as a “social club.” And similar to an exclusive high-end club, it’s got a members-only model.

  • Starbucks opens Tinseltown-inspired store at Universal Studios’ new retail venue

    Starbucks has set up shop at Universal Boulevard, a new main street-styled retail destination at Universal Studios Hollywood, in Universal City, California.

    The new, 5,000-sq.-ft. store is inspired by the history of Hollywood’s movies and culture.

    “We wanted to provide a sense of entertainment,” said Starbucks designer Erich Mele.

  • PREIT Sells four non-core malls for $92.35 million

    Philadelphia -- PREIT announced it has completed the sale of four additional non-core malls. This is a milestone achievement for the company that signifies the near-completion of non-core mall disposition effort with one remaining mall being marketed for sale.

    Mall disposition transactions include:
    • Lycoming Mall in Pennsdale, Pennsylvania, anchored by J.C. Penney, Sears, Bon-Ton and Macy's sold for $26.35 million.

  • Postmates offers new monthly model

    On-demand delivery provider Postmates is priming consumers for a new free delivery subscription service.

    Called Postmates Plus Unlimited, the service offers users free delivery and zero service fees on any purchase more than $30 from Postmates Plus merchant partners, who include American Apparel. Postmates Plus Unlimited purchases will be accepted instantly for faster response.
