  • Genesco cuts outlook

    Changing footwear trends took a bite out of Genesco Inc.’s sales in the second quarter.   The company reported net income of $14.6 million, up from a year-earlier profit of $7.5 million.   Genesco’s revenue for the second quarter, ended on July 30, fell 4.6% to a less-than-expected $625.6 million.   Total same-store sales fell 1%, with a 4% decline at the Journeys Group.   
  • Belk to test standalone store for private-label brand

    Department store retailer Belk is giving its Crown & Ivy private-label brand its very own freestanding location.    The brand, which Belk launched in in 2014, will open a store at Crabtree Valley Mall, Raleigh, North Carolina, according to a report by the Charlotte Observer.    Crown & Ivy offers preppy-styled apparel for women. 
  • Footwear retailer beats Street in Q2; identifies cost savings

    DSW Inc. on Tuesday posted better-than-expected results for its second quarter and reaffirmed its full-year outlook.    The company also said it expects to see $25 million of annualized savings in 2017 as a result of a restructuring program it launched earlier this year, with about $7 million of the total to be realized this year. The retailer said the savings would result “from organization realignment and improvements in procurement and other business processes.”  
  • Sporting goods retailer expands New York footprint

    Modell’s Sporting Goods will open two stores in the New York metro area on August 25, bringing its total store count to 156 locations.     The openings include Modell’s 11th location in Brooklyn, and a store in in Mount Kisco.    Both locations will feature a wide selection of top brands such as Nike, Under Armour, Adidas, Reebok, Spalding and more.
  • Retailer in store expansion push

    Not all retailers are reducing their store portfolios.    DSW Inc. announced it will open 21 stores nationwide between August and October. The footwear and accessories retailer currently operates 482 stores in 42 states.     "New store growth is an important and exciting piece of the DSW formula,” said Valara Gee, VP of stores, DSW.

  • Hibbett Sports tops Q2 profit forecasts

    Hibbett Sports reported fiscal second-quarter net income of $6.5 million, beating Wall Street expectations.   The sporting goods retailer posted revenue of $206.9 million in the period, a 3.9% increase but falling short of Street forecasts. Analysts expected $210.1 million.   Same-store sales inched up 0.8%.  
  • Two off-price retailers set to open at Butler’s Gainesville complex

    Payless ShoeSource and Marshalls will be opening their doors in the coming week in the Butler North power center of Butler Enterprises’ 267-acre retail park in Gainesville, Florida. Walmart Supercenter, Sam’s Club, Lowe’s, and Dick’s Sporting Goods made their debuts there earlier this year.   
  • Cole Haan, One World Trade Center, Manhattan

    Cole Haan has opened a global flagship at the just-opened Westfield World Trade Center in lower Manhattan. And the retailer is making it easy for shoppers to get there by linking up with Uber.
