    Ikea is going big in Memphis. The home furnishings giant plans to install the largest rooftop solar array in the state of Tennessee at its new store in Memphis. The 271,000-sq.-ft. Memphis Ikea is scheduled to open in late fall 2016, and panel installation for the solar energy system will begin this summer.

  • Target maximizes energy savings with new HVAC equipment

    The initiative is a three-year project that entails installing 3,600 York packaged rooftop units (Predator series) to maximize energy savings through more efficient HVAC equipment at stores eight years or older. The York rooftop units feature energy-saving technologies including variable-speed drives, California Title 24-compliant economizers and new energy recovery ventilators (ERV) specifically designed for retailers.
  • J.C. Penney moving forward with big new initiatives

    The likes of Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Best Buy have a new competitor to deal with—J.C. Penny. "The department store retailer on Monday announced a major expansion into home appliances, as well as two new tests in the home area, one involving Ashley Furniture, and the other national carpet and flooring company Empire Today.

  • Best Buy’s Geek Squad gets new green wheels

    Best Buy is ditching the signature Volkswagen Beetle it has used to transport its tech support arm, the Geek Squad, over the past 14 years in favor of Toyota’s Prius c hybrid cars.

    In addition to saving money on gasoline, switching to the hybrid gasoline-electric vehicle will produce about half the emissions of the previous Geekmobile over the life of the vehicle, in line with Best Buy’s commitment to reduce its own carbon emissions by 45% by 2020.

  • Sears expands omnichannel service; hopes more people will seek out ‘expert’

    Sears Holding Corp. is making a timely expansion to its seamless “Meet With An Expert” service as it looks to engage with shoppers this spring.

    Sears has extended its “Meet With An Expert” service introduced last fall to its lawn and garden department. The free service allows online shoppers to schedule in-store appointments with experts in specific product areas.

  • Best Buy bolsters appliance portfolio

    Whirlpool Corp. will bring its Maytag brand of appliances to 600 Best Buy stores this month rounding out what was already an extensive offering.

    Maytag brand products will hit the sales floor at 600 Best Buy stores in mid-April and also be sold online, the retailer said. The move expands Whirlpool’s assort at Best Buy which already includes the leading appliance manufacturer’s Whirlpool, KitchenAid and Amana brands. Best Buy also offer appliances from LG, Samsung, Frigidaire, Bosch and Electrolux.
