June 2016 Weather Report

5/25/2016

Temperatures in the East will be somewhat similar to last year while the West will trend cooler than last year. Rainfall will be greater across the Northwest, meanwhile across the Ohio Valley and interior Northeast, we may begin to see the start of a long-term drying trend.

The Memorial Day holiday weekend jumps one week later, falling at the beginning of the retail June calendar this year. The first sustained shot of more summer-like weather in the East, combined with the holiday, will result in a very strong demand for summer categories like pool chemicals, apparel, cold beverages, sun care, and air conditioners.

July 4th moves to the July retail calendar, but the week prior will fall in June and again will feature very favorable weather across the East. Cooler trends throughout the West will result in an overstock of summer categories if plans were built off of last year’s results. June 1 marks the beginning of the Atlantic Hurricane Season, which is expected to be more active than normal. In fact, very early in the month a tropical disturbance will impact the Southeast coast bringing primarily rain and thunderstorms, which will put a damper on some Memorial Day holiday plans along the coast.
