  • Dollar General races into a new deal with NASCAR

    GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — Dollar General and NASCAR have announced the first-ever national retail program around the Chase for NASCAR Sprint Cup. As part of the partnership, Dollar General will launch the "Race to Win" sweepstakes on Aug. 28. The sweepstakes, which runs through Nov. 12, offers customers the chance to win more than 9,000 prizes including free gas for a year, a trip to Las Vegas and $250,000.

    The sweepstakes will be promoted by NASCAR superstar Dale Earnhardt Jr. in stores, online and on national radio. 

  • Survey: Food trips to nontraditional stores on rise

    New York City -- A survey released Thursday by consumer research firm AlixPartners found that 51% of consumers visit traditional supermarkets for their grocery shopping, while 30% shop mass merchants such as Walmart for groceries. Drug stores pull 5% of grocery shoppers, as do dollar stores.

  • Victoria's Secret brings the sexy back to workouts

    NEW YORK — Victoria's Secret announced that it has launched a new line of workout gear called "VSX Sexy Sport." The collection will feature sports bras, yoga pants, tank tops, athletic shorts, accessories and other workout clothing pieces all designed with fit in mind, the company reported. 

    The collection is available in a variety of colors in sizes XS to large. Items are priced from $24.50 to $68.50.

  • Turn those awkward photos into college cash from Meijer

    GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Meijer and Dr. Pepper announced that they are often students the  chance to turn those awkward photos into money for college. Through August 27 participants can go to the Meijer Facebook page and upload their photos for a chance to win free tuition for a year (maximum value $20,000). 

  • Macy's snags big name Italian designer for capsule collection

    NEW YORK — Macy’s announced Giambattista Valli as the fourth designer in its collaboration series to create a capsule collection for the retailer’s fashion “Impulse” department later this fall. Known for extravagant designs and great party dresses, the collection will be Valli’s first foray into affordable fashion, the company reported.

  • Two Food Lion stores earn Gold-Level GreenChill store certification

    Salisbury, N.C. -- Grocery chain Food Lion said Tuesday that two of its stores have earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's 2011 Gold-Level GreenChill Store Certification Award, one of the agency's highest honors for refrigeration.

    The stores are located in Conyers, Ga., and in Columbia, S.C.

    Food Lion became a founding partner with the EPA's GreenChill program in 2007. Since that time, the grocer joined other food retailers to reduce refrigerant emissions and decrease impact on the ozone layer and climate change. Food Lion has won GreenChill's Distinguished Partner Award and its Superior Environmental Achievement Award in the past.

  • Home Depot Q2 net income rises 14% on storm-related repairs

    Atlanta -- Home Depot reported Tuesday that its second-quarter net income soared 14% to $1.36 billion, compared with $1.19 billion in the year-ago period. The home-improvement retailer cited an uptick in storm-related repairs and lawn supplies for the improved performance.

    Revenue rose 4% to $20.23 billion, topping Wall Street’s expected $19.97 billion. Same-store sales rose 4.3% globally and 3.5% in the United States.

  • Nordstrom, Express announce NYC-area stores

    New York City -- Nordstrom announced Monday that its new Treasure&Bond concept will open in SoHo on Friday, according to a report by the New York Times. The boutique-style store, which represents a new market entry for Nordstrom, will be a fraction of the size of a typical Nordstrom department store and all profits will be donated to charity. Merchandise is funkier, but is not discount like its Nordstrom Rack sister.
