  • New retail concept on fast track

    A new beauty format aimed at men is expanding through franchising.   Hammer & Nails | Grooming Shop for Guys announced it has sold franchise rights for 27 locations in Sacramento, California and in the San Francisco Bay Area, and for 55 franchises in Texas and New Mexico.  
  • Mexican developer to build 14 ‘Malltertainment’ centers

    Mexico City-based developer Grupo GICSA announced plans for 14 new experiential retail centers it will format under the trademarked term, “Mallterntainment.” GICSA is perhaps best known as the developer of the Paseo Arcos Bosques retail center in Mexico City (above).   Malltertainment developments will hew to four pillars, according to GICSA:   • Average area of 2 million sq. ft.;  
  • Genesco cuts outlook

    Changing footwear trends took a bite out of Genesco Inc.’s sales in the second quarter.   The company reported net income of $14.6 million, up from a year-earlier profit of $7.5 million.   Genesco’s revenue for the second quarter, ended on July 30, fell 4.6% to a less-than-expected $625.6 million.   Total same-store sales fell 1%, with a 4% decline at the Journeys Group.   
  • Iconic accessories brand to open first New York City store

    Vera Bradley in entering the New York City market, opening a digitally-savvy flagship in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood.      Scheduled to open in September, the two-level, 2,700-sq.-ft. store will carry the complete Vera Bradley collection, ranging from handbags and travel items to eyewear and jewelry, and debut the brand's newly redesigned logo and store concept.    
  • The Body Shop continues global expansion efforts

    The Body Shop is staking a new claim in South American as it opens its first location in Chile.    Lured by a population of 17.8 million, and a stable and prosperous customer base, The Body Shop’s new store is located in Santiago, Plaza Egaña Mall — a property that is called the most sustainable mall in Chile.  
  • David’s Bridal CEO steps down; replaced by former Gap head

    Photo: Paul Pressler   The CEO of David's Bridal is out after three years on the job.    The specialty retailer said Pam Wallack has left the company, but gave no reason for her departure, the Associated Press reported. Wallack will be replaced by David’s Bridal chairman and former Gap Inc. head Paul Pressler, who once worked with her at Gap.          
  • Lowe’s Foods opens at master-planned community in North Carolina

    Lowe’s Foods rang in retail this week at Morganton Park South in Southern Pines, North Carolina, opening a 50,000-sq.-ft. anchor store in the center that is part of the 188-acre Morganton Park master-planned community.   Lowe’s, which recently executed a re-branding, is a fixture in North Carolina, where it has done business since 1954. Its neighbors in the center are still to be determined. Leasing agent Lincoln Harris reports that most of the 21,000 remaining square feet in the center remains available.  
  • After 47 years, Florida retailer sets its sights on second location

    The story of Hy’s Toggery has been in the making for nearly half a century. What began in 1969 as a move by company founder Hy Wakstein to establish his own high-end menswear operation after 20-plus years in the industry would ultimately become a brand that has matured into one of the most respected independent clothiers in the southeast.
