  • Justice expands at Cafaro malls

    Youngstown, Ohio -- Cafaro Co. said Wednesday that teen retailer Justice is opening new stores at two of the company’s malls -- at Sundusky Mall, in Sandusky, Ohio, and at Kennedy Mall, in Dubuque, Iowa.

    The new stores will open by early May. The Sandusky location will occupy over 4,000 sq. ft. of space, while the store at Kennedy Mall will be just over 3,300 sq. ft.

  • Walmart drops plan to build store near Civil War site

    Orange, Va. -- Wal-Mart Stores has abandoned its plans to build a Walmart Superstore near a Civil War battlefield in Virginia. The retailer’s lawyers made the announcement Wednesday in a northern Virginia court, where a judge has been hearing a case to block the plan.

  • Meijer to open new urban format in Chicago suburb

    Berwyn, Ill. -- The city council of Berwyn, Ill., has unanimously approved a redevelopment agreement with Meijer to anchor the city’s Cermak Plaza shopping center. Meijer currently has nearly 200 locations in the Midwest, and this newest site will be the closest location to downtown Chicago.

    Meijer recently announced a new format, Chicagoland, for the urban marketplace. These urban infill stores will focus largely on grocery and pharmacy but will still offer general merchandise for a one-stop-shopping experience.

  • Englewood Construction announces new retail projects

    Chicago -- Lemont, Ill.-based Englewood Construction said Wednesday it has embarked on five new projects -- four in the Midwest and one in Washington, D.C.

    In the Chicago area, Englewood has been tapped for three new retail projects, including the interior build-out for a new Trader Joe’s coming to the city’s Lincoln Park neighborhood. Trader Joe’s will occupy 14,801 sq. ft. of first-floor retail space, topped by a two-story parking deck. The new store is slated to open in April.

  • EMS to open Manhattan store in fall

    Pearl River, N.J. -- Katz & Associates, the exclusive broker for Eastern Mountain Sports, announced that the retailer has executed a lease for a 3,000-sq.-ft. flagship on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

    The two-level store, EMS’ second to date in Manhattan, will be located on the southeast corner of Broadway and West 76th Street. It is scheduled to open this fall.

  • Simon to take on leasing, management and marketing duties at California shopping center

    Indianapolis  -- Simon Property Group will assume leasing, management, and marketing duties at The Shops at Montebello, in Rosemead, Calif., effective Feb. 1.

    "We are pleased to take on the property management functions of this high-quality asset at the request of the institutional owner," said Rick Sokolov, Simon's president and COO.

  • Crosland announces Charlotte-area openings

    Charlotte, N.C. -- Crosland has announced new openings and tenant signings at various third-party managed and leased retail centers throughout the Charlotte, N.C., area.

    Ruby’s Gift opened a 1,323-sq.-ft. store at Colony Shops in early December, the retailer’s third Charlotte location.

    Om Spa Chiropractic & Wellness is relocating its business from The Arlington to the newly renovated The Villa shopping center, and is slated to open the 3,048-sq.-ft. facility in January.

  • Bakehouse to open in Meatpacking District

    New York City -- TF Cornerstone said it has signed a 10-year, approximately 3,500-sq.-ft. lease with Bakehouse at 113 Horatio Street, in the Meatpacking District of New York City.

    In addition to the ground floor, the bakery will occupy approximately 3,500 sq. ft. of the building’s basement and will primarily be wholesaling cakes and pastries to the hotel and restaurant industry. The space will also be built out to accommodate a café/bakery and a French bistro-style restaurant which is anticipated to open this spring.
