  • Stage Stores taps former J.C. Penney exec as chief merchant

    Houston -- Stage Stores announced the appointment of Steven Lawrence as chief merchandising officer, effective April 30, 2012. Lawrence will be responsible for all of the merchandising, planning and allocation functions of the company.

    Prior to joining Stage Stores, Lawrence spent 11 years with J.C. Penney, where he was most recently co-chief merchant executive VP GMM men’s, kids & home.
     

  • Flur to leave Family Dollar

    Matthews, N.C. -- Family Dollar Stores said Monday that Dorlisa K. Flur, vice chair-strategy and chief administrative officer, plans to leave the company to pursue other interests, effective May 2.

    Flur joined Family Dollar in 2004 as SVP strategy and business development.

  • Modell’s names Dunkin’ Brands exec as COO

    New York -- Modell’s Sporting Goods announced that Daniel Sheehan joined the company as COO in April 2012. With over 27 years of management and information technology experience, Sheehan is responsible for store operations, distribution, loss prevention, e-commerce, information technology, visual merchandising and human resources.

  • U.S. lawmakers launch investigation into Wal-Mart bribery scandal

    New York -- Wal-Mart Stores confirmed that it is investigating its operations in Mexico for possible violations of the U.S. law that prohibits bribery overseas. The acknowledgement came in response to a lengthy article by The New York Times on Saturday that alleged the giant discounter first learned of allegations of "widespread bribery" by its workers in the country in 2005 and that top executives subsequently covered them up. 

  • Chico’s reduces power costs more than 60%, and operational costs by 75%, with HP POD technology

    Palo Alto, Calif. -- Women’s clothing retailer Chico’s FAS has chosen HP Performance Optimized Data Center (POD) technology as part of an HP Converged Infrastructure to increase productivity by providing employees at more than 600 stores nationwide with access to the company’s virtual private cloud.

    By creating a scalable private cloud to meet the company’s need for expansion, Chico’s has improved operational efficiencies while also increasing agility, HP said.

  • Best Buy appoints CEO search committee

    Minneapolis -- Best Buy Co. has announced the members of its CEO search committee. The company said the committee will oversee a global search process to identify internal and external candidates, including current interim CEO Mike Mikan.

    As part of Best Buy’s commitment to transparency, the company said the board will also publicly announce the selected search firm and will post the position on the company website. The final search firm selection will be announced in the next few weeks.

  • Giant Eagle rolls out Galleria end-cap planogram solution

    Chicago -- Supermarket retailer Giant Eagle said Thursday it has completed a rollout of Galleria's Promotional Display Optimization solution that allows the grocer to generate thousands of store-specific display plans on a daily basis.

    "We were already developing end-cap planograms, but Galleria enabled us to complete the process more efficiently," said Dan Schnorr, senior director of retail space planning, Giant Eagle.  

  • Lowe's announces executive promotions, newly created positions

    Mooresville, N.C. -- Lowe's Cos. Inc. said Thursday it has promoted two of its executives to newly created positions.

    Effective May 5, current executive VP business development Gregory Bridgeford been named chief customer officer. Rick Damron, executive VP store operations, has been named COO.
