Amazon integrates newest ‘Claude’ models into generative AI platform

Amazon Web Services Claude 3
AWS Bedrock is featuring Anthropic Claude 3 functionality.

Amazon is building on its $4 billion investment into artificial intelligence (AI) developer Anthropic.

The online giant’s Amazon Web Services (AWS) hosted cloud services division is making the Anthropic Claude 3 portfolio of generative AI models available on its Amazon Bedrock proprietary AI platform. This follows a strategic collaboration that will include an investment of up to $4 billion from Amazon the two companies entered in September 2023.

Anthropic’s generative AI foundation model, Claude, is a competitor with ChatGPT, a generative AI model developed by OpenAI which interacts with users in a conversational style that mimics human interaction and uses machine learning (ML) to continually refine and improve its responses.

Amazon Bedrock users will soon be able to access the Claude 3 assortment of vision-enabled models — Claude 3 Opus, Claude 3 Sonnet, and Claude 3 Haiku — on Amazon Bedrock, with Claude 3 Sonnet available Monday, March 4.

In addition to models from Anthropic, Amazon Bedrock’s range of generative AI models includes those from AI21 Labs, Cohere, Meta, Mistral AI, Stability AI, and Amazon),

According to Anthropic, Claude 3 offers improvements over other current generative AI models across tasks such as coding, and being able to understand non-English languages (including Spanish, Japanese and French), as well as lower levels of hallucinations (incorrect results), and higher levels of accuracy.

Claude 3 models can also produce outputs in formats that Anthropic says make it easier for customers to develop applications for use cases like natural language classification and sentiment analysis. All three new models have advanced vision capabilities, enabling them to process diverse data formats and analyze image data to better understand charts, graphs, technical diagrams, photos, and other visual assets.

Amazon goes all in on generative AI

The Amazon Bedrock-Mistral partnerships is the latest in a string of generative AI solutions and initiatives launched by Amazon. These include Rufus, an expert shopping assistant trained on Amazon’s product catalog, customer reviews, community Q&As, and information from across the web.

In addition, the e-tailer’s Amazon Pharmacy full-service digital pharmacy division recently began using generative AI, including multiple, pre-trained models from the Amazon Bedrock and Amazon SageMaker proprietary platforms, in an effort to fill prescriptions more quickly and accurately.

Other examples include a partnership with Nvidia to create a tool that identifies product listings where the content could be improved and automatically generates revised content, additional advanced AI tools designed to streamline the creation and editing of product listings, and AI-enabled features to assist fashion shoppers and sellers., such as personalized size recommendations.

The e-tailer also recently unveiled a generative AI-based chatbox for employees to use at work, and is letting customers search by image and summarize product reviews with generative AI.

Generative AI is also a key component of the Amazon Just Walk Out frictionless shopping platform, and the retailer is actively involved in efforts to streamline its supply chain with AI-equipped robots.
