The leading-edge artificial intelligence (AI) space has a new, highly influential player.

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud services platform of Amazon, is launching a limited preview of a new generative AI model called Bedrock. Based on machine learning (ML), generative AI can create new content and ideas, including conversations, stories, images, videos, and music.

While Bedrock is not based on the recently released leading-edge ChatGPT AI platform, it is clearly intended to provide the same type of leading-edge, human-type capabilities offered by ChatGPT. Bedrock is based on proprietary foundational models, which are very large ML models are pre-trained on vast amounts of data, provided by AI21 Labs, Anthropic, Stability AI, and Amazon accessible to developers via an API.

According to Amazon, Bedrock foundational models can be customized to fit the workflows of specific industries and perform a range of tasks including writing blog posts, generating images, solving math problems, engaging in dialog, and answering questions based on a document.

As part of its Bedrock preview, Amazon is also providing a limited release of Amazon CodeWhiperer, an AI-based coding assistant that uses a foundational model to generate code suggestions in real-time based on developers’ comments in natural language and prior code.

“The seeds of a machine learning (ML) paradigm shift have existed for decades, but with the ready availability of scalable compute capacity, a massive proliferation of data, and the rapid advancement of ML technologies, customers across industries are transforming their businesses,” Swami Sivasubramanian, VP, databased, analytics and ML at Amazon Web Services, said in a corporate blog post. “Just recently, generative AI applications like ChatGPT have captured widespread attention and imagination. We are truly at an exciting inflection point in the widespread adoption of ML, and we believe most customer experiences and applications will be reinvented with generative AI.

China’s JD pursues AI platform

Chinese e-commerce giant JD is also leveraging its proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to create a new industrial application. The highest-revenue direct retailer in China will utilize the Yanxi AI platform developed by its JD Cloud division to create an industrial version of the new AI-based open-source ChatGPT solution.

Known as ChatJD, the retailer says this application will correct what it says are ChatGPT shortcomings in loyalty, credibility, and accuracy that stem from a lack of vertical industry expertise and issues in its middle and application layers.
