  • Citi Trends narrowed loss in Q2 but missed Street

    Savannah, Ga. -- Despite narrowing its loss in the second quarter from $10 million to $7.9 million this quarter, Citi Trends still missed Wall Street expectations.
     
    Revenue edged up 2% to $132.3 million, which also missed analysts’ forecast. Wall Street expected sales of $133.9 million.
     
    Same-store sales slipped 4%.
     

  • Focus on: Gift Cards

    Retailers looking to add sparkle to this year’s Christmas season may want to take a new look at their gift card programs. Last year, more than half of consumers bought at least one gift card for the holidays, according to a report from First Data Corp., an Atlanta-based e-commerce processor.

    Indeed, consumers seem to be taking more of a shine than ever to these types of spending vehicles.

  • Former Walmart exec named CEO of Dots

    GLENWILLOW, Ohio — Fashion retailer Dots has named former Walmart SVP, Lisa Rhodes as its new CEO.

    Rhodes, who led Walmart's U.S. apparel merchandising division, has been charged with leading Dots’ march toward 1,000 stores.

    Prior to her role at Walmart, Rhodes was EVP and chief merchandising officer for Maurice’s.

  • PetSmart profit soars 31% in Q2

    Phoenix -- PetSmart reported Wednesday that net income for the second quarter surged 31% to $79 million, from $61 million in the year-ago period.

    Sales advanced 9% to $1.6 billion, and same-store sales grew 7.0%.

    “Our performance in the second quarter was due to strength across all three merchandising categories, as well as across services,” said Bob Moran, chairman and CEO.

    Foot Locker is kicking up its heels in the United Kingdom. The footwear giant has opened a new format — The Locker Room — with an eye to rolling it out throughout England and continental Europe. The concept expands Foot Locker’s core strength in athletic footwear to include apparel and accessories for a wide range of performance sports.

  • Finish Line names Wal-Mart exec as senior VP store operations

    Indianapolis -- The Finish Line announced Wednesday it has named Greg Beidler as senior VP store operations for the chain.

    Beidler was previously regional operations director for Sam’s Club/Wal-Mart Corp., and has served in management roles for GameStop, Brown Shoe, Circuit City and Athlete’s Foot.

  • Midwest Gloves expands product lineup

    Max Performance is the name of new work glove from category leader Midwest Quality Gloves.

    The company announced the new product introduction this week and design enhancements to the Max Performance line illustrate just how far the category of work gloves has progressed.

    The new product features a suede leather palm with padded palm patches, a spandex back, fourchette finger design and an elastic wrist, all of which are designed to provide a form-fitting, high performance product.

  • Staples Q2 profit tumbles 32% on weak North American sales

    Framingham, Mass. -- Staples reported Wednesday that profit for the quarter ended July 28 plummeted 32% to $120.4 million from $176.4 million, prompting the office supply retailer to cut its full-year guidance.

    Soft sales and slowed traffic in North America sent total revenue downward 6% to $5.5 billion; North American retail sales slipped 3%. Same-store sales declined 2%. Sales abroad fell 18%.
