TJX Cos. profit surges 58% on strong sales

Framingham, Mass. TJX Cos. said Tuesday that its first-quarter profit rose to $331.4 million, compared with $209.2 million in the year-ago period.

Sales leaped 15% to $5.02 billion, from $4.35 billion. Wall Street forecasted sales of $4.95 billion.
