McKeever’s debuts EBT SNAP payment on Instacart smart carts
McKeever's Market & Eatery is the first grocer to accept payment via electronic federal benefits directly from Instacart Caper Carts.
The regional grocer, which operates stores across Kansas City and Missouri, is letting participants in the EBT SNAP program (formerly known as “food stamps”) make payments for eligible items directly from Instacart Caper Carts. McKeever’s is the first retailer to offer this new functionality.
Provided in partnership with payments provider Forage, the feature makes it possible for SNAP participants to pay for their eligible items directly on the smart cart with their EBT card, with end-to-end encryption to protect card data and PIN entry.
“Caper Carts have been an excellent way to make shopping more efficient for our customers, from helping them maximize their budgets with real-time budget tracking to showing our SNAP customers what items are eligible for benefit use,” said Tim Cosens, CTO at McKeever’s. “We’re excited to be the first retailer to make shopping smoother for SNAP households by enabling EBT card payment directly on Caper Carts.”
Part of the Instacart Connected Stores platform, Caper Carts are equipped with cameras, a built-in scale, and location sensors connected to Nvidia Jetson hardware which work together with an edge AI system to automatically recognize items as they are placed in the cart.
Once products are added, customers can watch their running cost total, similar to an online shopping cart. Caper Carts also feature an interactive screen that tracks spending, provides access to deals, and offers product recommendations based on the customer's location in the store and the carts' contents.
McKeever’s initially deployed Caper Carts in June 2024. Instacart has also deployed Caper Cart tools that let eligible shoppers view their EBT balance at any time and track EBT SNAP-eligible items. EBT SNAP payment enablement on-cart is now available at McKeever’s, with more retailers coming soon.

“Customers using Caper Carts tell us they love tracking their spending, discovering deals right in the aisle, and skipping the unload at checkout,” said David McIntosh, Chief Connected Stores Officer at Instacart. “Adding EBT SNAP payments on Caper is another important step towards transforming the everyday grocery trip for families and ensuring every family has access to a seamless shopping experience. We’re proud to partner with retailers, like McKeever’s, that are embracing these new capabilities to better serve all of the communities.”
