    Newest ASHRAE standard reduces LPD allowances

    The ANSI/ASHRAE/IES 90.1 energy standard provides a model energy code to jurisdictions interested in regulating the energy-efficient design of commercial buildings. ASHRAE recently published the 2016 version, which supersedes the 2013 version.

    The U.S. Department of Energy recognizes the 2013 version as the national energy reference standard. Starting in October 2016, all states were required to have an energy code in place at least as stringent as 90.1-2013 or justify why they could not comply.

    Apple’s Spaceship to Land


    Apple will open its highly anticipated new campus in April. Dubbed Apple Park, the site is located on a 175-acre site in Cupertino, Calif.

    The heart of the campus is a futuristic, ring-shaped, 2.8 million-sq.-ft. headquarters building that’s clad entirely in panels of curved glass. Designed in collaboration with Foster + Partners, Apple Park is powered by 100% renewable energy. With 17 megawatts of rooftop solar, the campus will run one of the largest on-site solar energy installations in the world.

  • Twitter makes direct messages more personal

    Twitter is taking a new approach to “humanize” its business partners’ customer service-based “Direct Messages.”   Twitter’s new feature – “Custom Profiles in Direct Messages” – allows businesses to better emphasize the human element in private conversations, as well as more clearly indicate when a bot is speaking, according to Twitter.   
  • Apple's spaceship-styled, energy-conserving home office to lift off in April

    Apple is preparing to unveil its latest development: Apple Park.   The name of Apple’s new spaceship-looking home office, Apple Park is a 175-acre campus located in California’s Santa Clara Valley. The new building, slated to open in April, will welcome more than 12,000 people over a six-month period. Construction of the campus and parklands is scheduled to continue through the summer, Apple said.  
  • Havertys beats Q4 estimates

    Better control over pricing and inventory helped boost Havertys fourth quarter earnings, beating analyst expectations.   Net sales for the quarter ended December 31, 2016, increased 2.2% to $220.6 million, compared to analyst expectations of $220.61 million.   Same-store sales rose 2.5%, and the average written ticket was up 2.6%, while custom upholstery written business rose 1.9%.  
  • Men’s specialty retailer streamlines financial transaction auditing

    As retailers expand the breadth of their omnichannel operations, they need better visibility into their financial data.   This is not an easy task for retailers like Tailored Brands, whose expansive retail portfolio includes Men's Wearhouse, Jos. A. Bank, Joseph Abboud, Moores Clothing for Men and K&G Fashion Superstore. The company also operates a global corporate apparel and workwear group consisting of Twin Hill in the U.S. and Dimensions, Alexandra and Yaffy in the U.K.  
  • Tech giant creates global IoT headquarters

    IBM is taking the next step in its IoT journey.   The technology provider has opened the doors of its new $200 million global headquarters for its Watson Internet of Things (IoT) business in Munich, Germany. The space will also serve as an innovation space for the European IoT standards organization, EEBus.   "We have reached a tipping point with IoT innovation,” said Harriet Green, general manager, IBM Watson IoT, cognitive engagement and education.   
  • Report: Cyber-attacks cost companies more than revenue

    Companies that suffer a data breach are subject to customer, opportunity and revenue losses well exceeding 20%.   This was according to the “2017 Annual Cybersecurity Report (ACR),” from Cisco, which surveyed nearly 3,000 chief security officers (CSOs) and security operations leaders from 13 countries in the “Security Capabilities Benchmark Study,” part of the ACR.  
  • C-store chain improves workforce management operations

    Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores is getting its stores on the same page.   The convenience and fuel chain, which operates more than 400 locations in 40 states, employs more than 17,000 people. By adding Reflexis Workforce Manager, it will have a consistent way to manage its budgeting, forecasting, and labor scheduling across the enterprise.   
  • Verizon: Data breaches are more complex, pervasive and damaging

    As data breaches become more complex, they leave a lingering, if not lasting imprint on an enterprise.   While there are many factors that play a significant role in data breaches and cybersecurity incidents, the human element remains the top source contributing to cybercrimes, according to the “2017 Data Breach Digest,” from Verizon.
