GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Meijer announced that it is strengthening its commitment to local suppliers by increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables it sources from Midwest farms by 5% this year.  The announcement was made today by Mark Stevenson, produce director at the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based supercenter chain.

Oakland, Calif. -- GT Nexus announced Tuesday that Liz Claiborne has extended its contract for a supply chain visibility and control platform.

Delivered as a cloud service, the platform gives Liz Claiborne the capability to tightly monitor and control inventory flows between suppliers, logistics providers, distribution centers and customers.

SUNBURY, Pa. — The Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania recently recognized Weis Markets for its commitment to recycling and its innovative program to recycle waxed cardboard used to ship and store fresh vegetables and meats, the grocer announced Monday.

In 2010, Weis Markets teamed up with Envirolog to recycle its waxed cardboard and produce Envirolog fireplace logs, which are sold in Weis Markets stores.  Typically, supermarkets send most of their waxed cardboard to landfills since it is difficult to recycle.

Washington, D.C. -- A report released Tuesday by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates showed that import cargo volume at the nation’s major retail container ports dropped below last year, but are expected to see year-over-year gains again this fall.

According to the monthly Global Port Tracker report, volumes will stay below last year through the summer, but will edge up as retailers begin to stock up for the holiday season.

SALISBURY, N.C. — New stores, higher retail inflation and positive calendar impact drove sales up for Delhaize America, the U.S. sector of the Delhaize Group, during the second quarter ended June 30.

The division, which operates such banners as Food Lion, Hannaford and Bottom Dollar Food, reported that revenues rose 4.3% to $4.9 billion, while comparable-store sales increased 1.6%. Operating profit, however, dropped 2.7% to $205 million.

El Segundo, Calif. -- Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market has added 25 compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles to its distribution fleet as part of a partnership with Ryder System. The new vehicles produce 20% to 30% less emissions than comparable diesel vehicles and are part of the company’s ongoing efforts to reduce emissions.

Plano, Texas -- In a notification to Connecticut’s labor department, J.C. Penney Co. said it will lay off 442 workers at J.C. Penney’s distribution center in Manchester, Conn.

According to the notice, J.C. Penney is closing the facility's dot-com unit, and that employees' last day will be Sept 30.
