  • Meijer to spend $400 million on new stores, remodels

    Meijer will spend $400 million on store expansion and remodeling in 2016 as the chain looks to expand its footprint.

    The investment includes the construction of nine new Meijer supercenters and 32 remodel projects. While Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin will each welcome new Meijer supercenters later this year, dozens of other Meijer stores have begun or will soon begin remodel projects to further enhance the customer shopping experience.

  • Von Maur’s expanding footprint

    Von Maur Department Store is doubling down in Minnesota.

    The family-owned company will open a 140,000-sq.-ft. store at the Rosedale Center in St. Paul. Scheduled to open fall 2018, the store will be the retailer’s second location in Minnesota. Construction is due to begin in spring 2017.

  • Aldi drops ban on credit cards

    Fast-expanding grocery chain Aldi is making it even easier for consumers to shop its no-frills stores.

    The European chain has announced it will now accept credit cards – including Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express – at all of its stores across the country.

  • Grocer racks up another impressive year

    Publix Super Markets hit a milestone in 2015 as it exceeded the $30 billion mark in annual sales and also racked up another impressive quarter.

    The grocer reported that net earnings for the quarter ended Dec. 26, 2015, rose 15% to $521.1 million, from $453.3 million in the year ago period. For the full year, earnings rose some 13%, to $2 billion, compared to $1.7 billion last year.

  • Family Dollar helps Dollar Tree win customers in Q4

    Dollar Tree says the integration of Family Dollar stores helped grow sales and profit in the fourth quarter.

    For its fourth quarter ended Jan. 30, net sales at Dollar Tree were $5.37 billion, a 116.7% increase from the same period a year ago. The boost in revenue was the result of $2.68 billion in sales from the Family Dollar d. Same store sales increased 1.7%. Profit was $229 million, up by $22.4 million from a year ago. 

  • Former Walmart exec to be new CEO at Mills Fleet Farm

    The former chief merchandising and marketing officer at Walmart has joined a Midwestern chain of farm and home stores as its new CEO.

    Mills Fleet Farm announced that former Walmart executive and Wisconsin native Duncan Mac Naughton will assume the role of CEO of the company now that it has been acquired by KKR, a global investment firm.

  • Albertsons sets goal for cage-free eggs by 2025

    Albertsons is joining other major retailers in working with its suppliers toward a goal of sourcing only cage-free eggs for its store operations.

    The company, among the first and largest in the conventional retail grocery sector to make such a commitment, is making the move not only as part of its ongoing commitment to animal welfare but also in response to customer buying habits.
