Walmart is schooling students in Virginia on savings with the latest iteration of its on campus concept store first introduced in 2011.
The new 4,100-sq.-ft. Walmart on Campus is located at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. The store opened April 29 and is part of an ongoing pilot program at Walmart to designed to provide VCU students and faculty, as well as the surrounding neighborhood, more convenient access to affordable products.
The first Walmart on Campus opened at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville in January 2011 and since then three more have opened in states across the country. The campus concept isn’t a growth vehicle in the traditional sense, but it is extremely useful from a brand building standpoint, offering Walmart the opportunity to endear itself to potential lifelong customers.
The store features a pharmacy and offers groceries and general merchandise, including an assortment of fresh produce, dairy and meats, dry goods, consumables, health and beauty aids, over-the-counter medicines and merchandise tailored to the campus.
