  • CEO of specialty apparel chain out

    The fashion retailer known for its bold, colorful designs is losing its chief executive.   Benetton Group’s Marco Airoldi will resign as of May 16. The board accepted his resignation on Tuesday.   Airoldi joined the company in 2013 – first as a consultant, then as CEO and managing director. During his tenure, he has contributed to the definition and subsequent launch of the company’s refocus and relaunch plan, which targets a selection of markets, stores and the Benetton Group brands.

    South Moon Under is on the move. The on-trend fashion retailer, which carries a variety of contemporary brands, will open its first stores in the South in April, with locations at Ponce City Market, Atlanta, and Avalon, Alpharetta, Georgia. In the fall, the company will open a store at Shops Around Lenox, Atlanta.

  • J.Jill ends Q4 with a profit, building momentum for 2017

    Ending its fiscal year with a strong fourth quarter has helped J.Jill hit year-over-year earnings growth for 20 consecutive quarters.   For the quarter ended January 28, 2017, the retailer’s total net sales increased by 14.8% to $166.9 million, up from $145.4 million in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2015. Gross profit increased to $105.5 million, up from $91.4 million in the same period last year. As a percentage of total net sales, gross profit was 63.2% compared to 62.9% in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2015.  
  • Department store retailer creates 'dress destination'

    Lord & Taylor is looking to engage shoppers with a new luxe concept dedicated entirely to one of its core categories: dresses.   The retailer has transformed the fifth floor of its Manhattan flagship into a dedicated space for dress shopping for all occasions. Spanning over 30,000 sq. ft., the updated space includes a rotating pop-up shop that launches with one-of-a-kind vintage designer dresses, a concierge service, and The Gallery, a dedicated area for designer dresses.  
  • Confirmed: Walmart acquires another online retailer

    Walmart continues to grow both its e-commerce and fashion presence.    On Friday, the discounter announced it had acquired the assets and operations of online retailer ModCloth, which specializes in eclectic and quirky apparel and accessories for 18- to 35-year-old women. The company did not reveal the purchase price.  
  • Former Gymboree CEO to head up Banana Republic

    It’s a homecoming of sorts for Mark Breitbard.     Gap Inc. on Tuesday named Breitbard as president and CEO of its struggling Banana Republic division.       Breitbard served as CEO at The Gymboree Corporation from 2013 until he stepped down in early 2017. From 2010 to 2013, he held leadership positions across Gap North America, where he was instrumental in delivering the product-led resurgence of Gap’s North America business.    
  • Specialty retailer breaks into Canada

    Destination XL is expanding its presence in North America.   The male apparel retailer is opening its first Canadian store in Ajax, Ontario. The 5,028-sq.-ft. location features more than 100 brands and thousands of styles from top designers, including Michael Kors, Polo Ralph Lauren, Buffalo Jeans, Nautica, Levi’s and Cole Haan, as well as exclusive brands, such as Brooks Brothers and Lacoste. Private-label brands Harbor Bay, 28 Degrees, Oak Hill and True Nation, round out the assortment, DXL said.  
  • Longtime CEO of PacSun out

    There’s been a change at the top of teen apparel retailer Pacific Sunwear of California (PacSun).   Chief executive Gary Schoenfeld has departed the chain, which is owned by Golden Gate Capital. The news was first reported by shop-eat-surf.com   Schoenfeld had served as CEO of PacSun since 2009. No reason was given for his departure.   
  • Veteran retailer takes control at Land’s End

    Lands’ End has a new person at the top.   Jerome Griffith has officially taken the reins as CEO of the company, and also joined the board of directors. He succeeds Joseph Boitano and James Gooch, who have served as co-interim CEOs since September 2016, when CEO Federica Marchionni was forced out after less than two years amid an ongoing sales slump.
