  • Wal-Mart surprises with higher-than-expected Q1 revenue and profit

    Wal-Mart Stores broke the retail gloom that has penetrated so many recent first quarter earnings reports as it posted higher than expected earnings and revenue gains, and gave an upbeat view for the current period.

    Wal-Mart’s strong performance in a quarter that has challenged so many other retailers, including Target, offered evidence that its efforts to improve its U.S. stores are paying off. Among other things, the giant discounter has increased associate pay and taken moves to ensure its stores are more consistently in stock.

    Digital computer and electronics retailer Newegg wants to engage customers wherever they are, including on one of the world’s most popular social messaging apps.

    Newegg will begin using Facebook Messenger to provide customer support. The e-tailer currently offers customer support options via email, SMS text message, phone and chat. Giving customers the ability to engage with Newegg’s customer support representatives via Messenger is an important asset to add to the company’s mobile strategy, according to executives.

    Sam's Club is building a team of regional U.S. buyers to bring in more local and organic groceries in order to attract wealthier customers and better compete with Costco.

    According to Reuters,Sam's Club has hired a handful of buyers in Dallas and is considering putting teams in up to five other markets, John Furner, chief merchandising officer at Sam's Club, told Reuters. Until now, all of its buyers have worked out of company headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas.

    Fourth quarter data from the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) shows Amazon.com led all online retailers with a score of 83.out of 100. Compared to the prior year, overall Internet retail customer satisfaction slipped 2.4% to a score of 80 out of 100. This still leads all other retail categories in the Index.
