    Thirsty for meaningful brand interactions, consumers are turning to social media more regularly.
     
    While it’s still largely used for socializing and product discovery, social media is increasingly influencing consumer purchasing decisions, according to “Shopping’s Social Influence,” a new report from digital advertising and analytics firm Adlucent.
     

  • Publix invites customers to its first-ever blog

    Publix Super Markets is expanding its online outreach by launching the company’s first blog for engaging with customers.   The blog, called Publix Checkout, was created with the customer in mind, the company says. Blog posts will range in topic from recipes, community initiatives and sustainability ideas to holiday entertaining, health and wellness and more. Visitors to the blog can comment on posts or share them on social media sites.  
  • Pinterest ramps up shopping efforts — and adds some cool new tools

    Pinterest is making it easier for consumers to shop and buy on its site.    The company, which claims 100 million monthly users, on Tuesday unveiled a collection of new tools, called “Shopping with Pinterest,” that includes visual search technology that lets people search for similar items shown featured in a pin (post).   
  • Wayfair brings products into consumers’ home — virtually

    Customers of Wayfair Inc. no longer have to guess how items will look in their own personal spaces.

    The online home furnishings and decor retailer has launched WayfairView, its new augmented reality (AR) smartphone application. Developed by Wayfair Next, the company’s in-house research and development team, the app, using Google technology, allows shoppers to visualize furniture and décor in their homes at full-scale before they make a purchase.

  • Study: Everybody loves e-commerce

    It seems safe to say the novelty of shopping online has worn off.

    According to a new study examining the online shopping and purchase habits of the U.S. population from e-commerce platform BigCommerce, 96% of Americans are shopping online. E-commerce customers spend an average of five hours per week making online purchases and allocate an average of 36% of their shopping budgets to e-commerce.

    Respondents ranked online shopping ahead of smartphone GPS and streaming media as a basic essential they could not live without.

    Twitter, which has been piloting an embedded buy button in tweets since September 2014, is abandoning the effort. Recent studies from Forrester and GlobalWebIndex indicate generally low consumer usage rates for social buy buttons, which are also offered by platforms such as Pinterest and Instagram.
