  • Best Buy adds Silicon Valley heft to board

    The board of directors at Best Buy Co. is losing a longtime board member and gaining a new voice with experience in forming relationships with top venture capitalists in Silicon Valley.

    The retailer announced that former CEO Brad Anderson will retire from the board of directors and that the company has appointed corporate venture capital leader Claudia Fan Munce to the board.Anderson will serve the remainder of his term through the end of the annual shareholder meeting on June 14. Munce will stand for election at that time.

    Specialty outdoor retailer The North Face is reportedly taking a desktop-based interactive online shopping experience it launched in December to a new platform. According to VentureBeat, The North Face is launching a mobile app that will let consumers find products using natural conversation to conduct searches and receive personalized recommendations. The app is scheduled to launch in April 2016.

    Appliance manufacturer Whirlpool is launching a new partnership with IBM that is likely a sign of how the consumer product market will substantially change in the next few years.

    Whirlpool is now combining connected home appliances with IBM Watson services, including cognitive analytics, to provide more personalized services to consumers.

    Under Armour has entered a strategic partnership with IBM to create and provide data-backed health and fitness insights, powered by IBM Watson's cognitive computing technology. The partnership will combine Under Armour’s new UA Record personal fitness app with an IBM Watson Cognitive Coaching System.

  • IBM: Holiday shoppers go high-tech

    Retailers just went through an increasingly digital and mobile holiday season.

    According to analysis performed by the IBM Watson business intelligence platform, the average order value for the mobile and desktop shopper combined was $127.49, up 2.5% from 2014 ($124.33).

    Consumers also shopped via their mobile devices in growing numbers. Mobile traffic exceeded desktop, traffic, accounting for 52% of all online traffic. This was a 17% increase in mobile traffic from 2014.
