  • American Express survey finds some small business owners believe U.S. still in recession

    New York City -- Research results released Tuesday by American Express found that more than a third (38%) of small business owners believe that the U.S. is still in the throes of a recession.

    According to the American Express OPEN Small Business Monitor, a semi-annual survey in its 10th year, concerns about the economy are weighing heavily on entrepreneurs. Twenty-seven percent say they do not plan to grow in the next six months (up from 21% in the spring) and just 77% describe themselves as glass-half-full optimists (down from 85% a year ago).

  • Peruvian Atelier to open at West 7th development

    Fort Worth, Texas -- Dallas-based Cypress Equities said that its West 7th mixed-use development in Fort Worth, Texas, has signed specialty women’s fashion retailer Peruvian Atelier for a 2,357-sq.-ft. shop slated to open in late 2011.

    The new store will be located between Flirt Boutique and the soon-to-open Keena’s.

  • A.C. Moore to be acquired for $40.8 million

    Berlin, N.J. — The 134-store arts and crafts chain A.C. Moore said Tuesday it has agreed to be acquired by an affiliate of arts and crafts distributor Sbar’s Inc. for about $40.8 million.

    Last January, the company said it had formed a committee to review strategic alternatives, including a potential sale.

  • Ross Dress for Less expanding in Chicago area

    Dublin, Calif. - Ross Dress for Less will open four new locations in the greater Chicago area on March 8, 2014. These openings bring the total number of Chicago area stores to 35 for the retailer.

    An opening salvo has been fired in the Black Friday battle and this one emanated from South Florida where the massive Sawgrass Mills outlet mall announced it will stay open around the clock beginning at 10 p.m. on Thanskgiving day. The mall is home to a Super Target and about 350 other stores.

  • Zara selects Schimenti Construction to build Manhattan flagship

    Ridgefield, Conn. — Spanish fast-fashion retail giant Zara has chosen Schimenti Construction Company to build its new flagship at 666 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. The 39,000-sq.-ft. store is located in the former home of the NBA Store.

    “We have begun the first phase (demolition and structural work) of the project which has included lowering the second floor to provide a higher ceiling and installing new steel beams,” said project executive Joseph Schimenti.
