Toronto -- Canadian discounter The Bargain Shops said Tuesday it has hired Beryl Jack Buley, former division president of Dollar General Corp., as its CEO.

The retailer said it is prepping for Target Corp.’s takeover of former Zellers stores across Canada in two years, which could shift some of Bargain Shop customers over to Target.

According to an Associated Press report, however, Buley said he is not worried about the impending competition from Target, saying that “enormous opportunity” remains in Canada.

Orlando, Fla. -- Jones Lang LaSalle said Tuesday it has appointed Carson Good to lead the firm’s retail capital market business throughout Florida.

New York City -- ACI Worldwide, an international provider of payment systems, announced that it has acquired ISD Corp. to broaden the functionality of its payments solutions for retailers. ISD is a provider of secure payment management software and solutions for retailers in the United States and Canada.

With the addition of 140 customers from ISD, ACI now has more than 220 retailers worldwide running ACI payment systems.

CINCINNATI -- Macy's Inc. announced that it will make a corporate contribution of $100,000 in cash to the American Red Cross for earthquake and tsunami relief on behalf of Macy's and Bloomingdale's associates across America. In addition, the company said it will match, on a dollar-for-dollar basis, all employee contributions of $25 or more to the American Red Cross and other U.S.-based organizations providing rescue and relief assistance in Japan. 

Johannesburg, South Africa -- A Tuesday report by Bloomberg said that hearings on a Wal-Mart Stores bid to acquire control of Massmart Holdings Ltd. will be adjourned to May 9, following an earlier announcement on Tuesday that the hearings would proceed this week.

After announcing that it will hear evidence from labor unions and Wal-Mart and Massmart this week and from the government on May 9 and May 10, South Africa’s Competition Tribunal now say the hearing has been adjourned to May 9.

New York -- Despite continued weakness in the overall economy, middle and upper-class consumers appear to remain little affected by the downturn, as evidenced by Tiffany & Co.'s U.S. same-store sales growth of 9% during its fiscal fourth quarter. Worldwide sales were up 12% for the quarter.

Japan may be a wealthy country, but as the death toll there continues to rise, major U.S. corporations are stepping up with significant donations and Target is among them. The company last week announced it would contribute $500,000 to Save the Children, an organization that is aiding with Japan’s earthquake and tsunami relief efforts.
