  • Food inflation to benefit comps in months ahead

    American consumers may not like inflation, but retailers are enjoying the favorable impact rising prices have on their same-store sales calculations. It was evident last month when most retailers reported healthy comp increases, and more of the same could be in store for July as it appears retailers are effectively passing through increased prices to shoppers.

    AUSTIN, Texas — Whole Foods Market announced that it has launched the Whole Kids Foundation, a charitable organization that will provide children with access to healthy food choices through partnerships with schools, educators and organizations.

  • Bottom Dollar Food grocery chain expanding

    Salisbury, N.C. -- Discount grocery chain Bottom Dollar Food announced Monday plans to enter the greater Pittsburgh and Youngstown, Ohio, markets.

    The expansion includes 14 stores that will open in 2012 and slated to create more than 600 jobs.

  • LIMA names SVP membership, new business development

    NEW YORK — The International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association has announced that Adam Berg has joined as SVP membership and new business development.

    Berg comes to LIMA following a lengthy career with Equity Management, a leading trademark licensing firm, where he most recently served as SVP licensing sales. Previously he worked in licensing sales for Hamilton Projects and held various new project development positions in the entertainment industry. 

  • Whole Foods launches charitable organization for children

    Austin, Texas -- Whole Foods Market announced Monday it is launching a charitable organization with a goal to provide children access to healthy foods.

    Whole Kids Foundation, said the grocer, will work with schools, educators and other organizations to help improve children's food choices.

    The foundation's first initiative is a program to help put in place or expand teaching gardens to help build children's relationships with food through the power of gardening.

  • NRF survey throws wet blanket on seasonal sales

    If consumers can be trusted to accurately describe their spending intentions well in advance of when they actually incur expenses then this year’s back-to-school season will be weaker than last year’s. The National Retail Federation’s annual BTS survey got a lot of attention when it was released last week because consumer data compiled by the trade group forecast a decline in spending.

  • Opponents seeking a second chance in South Africa

    The ministers of economic development, trade and industry and agriculture, forestry and fisheries in South Africa are protesting the nation’s Competition Tribunal’s approval of a merger agreement between Walmart and Massmart. The three government entities are seeking to set aside a ruling that allowed Walmart to acquire a 51% ownership stake in Massmart last month on the grounds that the tribunal acted irregularly with regard to matters of documents presented during the discovery process and the scheduling of decisions.
