Amazon teams with Grubhub, Uber Eats for conversational food ordering

Alexa+ users can directly order via Grubhub and Uber Eats.

Amazon continues expanding the capabilities of the latest version of its Amazon Alexa voice-enabled device.

Initially introduced in February 2025, Alexa+ combines more than 70 large language models and agentic capabilities, supported by the Amazon Bedrock platform on Amazon Web Services.

Now, Amazon is enabling Alexa+ users to change their mind, ask questions, and customize as they go when placing food delivery orders with the Grubhub and Uber Eats on-demand delivery platforms.

When they start a Grubhub or Uber Eats order, Alexa+ users who link their account with one of those delivery platforms through the Alexa app will see a new conversational window, with their past orders automatically synced so they can search for restaurants by name or cuisine, reorder a previous meal, or start a totally new ordering process.

Customers can add and modify items through natural language requests such as “add a double cheeseburger” and ask to see menu items such as desserts or kid-friendly meals while viewing their cart. Users will see changes in real time on the screen, and Alexa only steps in when they need help or have questions.

Alexa+ users will then see a complete summary of everything in their cart, item names, quantities, individual prices, and total cost before making a purchase. Amazon Prime members have a free subscription to the Grubhub+ paid loyalty program as a membership perk and Amazon and Grubhub have been collaborating on joint delivery offerings since 2021.

In addition, U.S. consumers have been able to use their Amazon Echo devices to track the status of Uber Eats orders since 2023.

“What excites us about Alexa+ is how it turns restaurant discovery and ordering into one seamless, conversational experience,” said Tapojoy Chatterjee, VP of product at Grubhub. “Customers can simply talk through what they’re craving, ask questions, get recommendations, and build their order in real time. It’s an added convenience for diners, and for our restaurant partners, it provides another meaningful path for visibility and a smooth transition from discovery to a completed order."

After placing an order, Alexa+ users will receive status updates in their "For You" section and check progress anytime by asking "Alexa, where's my food?" According to Amazon, this collaborative effort is the first step toward Alexa+ automatically adjusting its interaction model based on the task a user is trying to complete.

“At Uber Eats, we’re always looking for new ways to help customers discover and order the food they love,” said Harshit Agarwal, head of Uber Eats product. “Partnering with Amazon on Alexa+ is an exciting step in exploring how conversational experiences can make ordering even easier. We’re proud to collaborate on innovations that meet customers wherever they are, while unlocking new ways for them to engage with our platform.”

This new food ordering experience is starting to roll out to Alexa+ customers with Echo Show 8 devices and larger.
