Store Expansion News: August update

Retailers and restaurants alike made headlines in August with store expansions and new formats. 

Here are the major stories as reported by CSA, starting with the most recent.

  • Skims opens in Austin, three more locations planned for 2024 The shapewear and apparel brand founded by reality TV superstar and entrepreneur Kim Kardashian has landed in Texas. Skims has opened its third physical store at the upscale Domain Northside shopping center in Austin.
  • Raising Cane’s opens golden store in Boston Raising Cane’s celebrated 28 years in business on Aug. 28 with the opening of its 828th restaurant. Located in downtown Boston, the outpost boasts a gold theme, with gold walls, floors and seating as well as kiosks.
  • Spirit Halloween to open record number of seasonal stores The seasonal retailer will open a record-breaking 1,525 locations this year in the United States and Canada, the majority of which (more than 1,100) are already open.
  • Sprouts to open 21 stores by year’s end The fresh, natural and organic foods grocer will also be busy between now and December, opening 21 stores during the next several months. The openings are in line with Sprouts' previously announced goal of opening 35 new locations during its current fiscal year.
  • Redberry opens first of 300 Jersey Mike’s stores planned for Canada The Aug. 28 opening of Jersey Mike’s in Markham, part of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), marks the first major international expansion for the sandwich chain. The store is the first of 300 new Jersey Mike's restaurants Redberry Restaurants is bringing to Canada over the next 10 years.

  • Freddy’s plans 10 new South Carolina stores The Kansas-based burger chain has reached a multi-unit development agreement to bring 10 new locations to Greenville and Spartanburg Counties in northern South Carolina. NFL offensive lineman Ben Powers, along with GVL Hospitality Group, are leading the expansion.
  • Loblaw to test no-frills discount store The Canadian grocery giant will open three stores under the No Name banner in the Ontario province starting in September, in Windsor, St. Catharine and Brockville. Loblaw said the new format will help customers save up to 20% on everyday grocery and household essentials by lowering operating costs and carrying only a targeted assortment of products.
  • Nordstrom Rack adds new store to 2025 lineup Nordstrom’s off-price footprint continues its expansion across the Grand Canyon state. The new 26,000-sq.-ft. Nordstrom Rack location will open in Surprise, Ariz. in fall 2025. 
  • Perigold to debut in brick-and-mortar The designer-driven, online provider of luxe home furnishings owned by Wayfair will debut in physical retail next year. Its first location will be a two-floor, 30,000-sq.-ft. space at CityPlace in West Palm Beach.
  • Shipley Do-Nuts plans Southern expansion The Houston-based donut chain added over 80 units to its development pipeline, with openings planned later this year in several states. Shipley says it is focusing on growing in Georgia, with a potential for 90 units in the Atlanta area, and also sees opportunities in Savannah, Augusta and Columbus. 
  • Houston TX Hot Chicken eyes 75 stores by end of 2025 The Texas-based chicken chain will open its 20th location in San Diego on Sept. 21, adding to its footprint of stores in Arizona, California, Nevada, Washington, Texas, Utah, Idaho and Michigan. With the upcoming SoCal location, HHC says it currently has 300 franchise commitments with a plan to reach 75 opened stores by the end of 2025. 
  • Qdoba plans nearly 40 new locations across the county The Mexican fast-casual chain will open 39 new locations across major markets including in Chicago, Portland, Ore. and Northern Virginia. The expansion plans further the Qdoba's aggressive growth strategy aimed at doubling its footprint to 1,500 units over the next seven years.
  • Australia’s Princess Polly plots U.S. store growth The Australian-born, digitally-native trendy apparel brand plans to open five new U.S. stores in the back half of 2024. The new locations come in the wake of the success of Princess Polly’s first U.S. store, which debuted late last year at Westfield Century City in Los Angeles.
  • Ace Hardware unveils new format The hardware chain debuted a new store concept, dubbed “Elevate3 Ace,” with a 13,000-sq.-ft., full-scale model at its fall 2024 convention in Chicago. The format, which Ace will begin rolling out in January, features brand showrooms, an outdoor backyard space, enhanced customer service and new product assortments that focus on brands that are “fueling growth” for Ace.
  • Daiso to expand U.S. store count The Japanese chain, which sells household goods, stationery, beauty products and more, opened new locations in Beaumont, Texas, Van Nuys, Calif. and Westminster Calif. on Aug. 10. Daiso said that additional openings in new states are planned for the remainder of the year.
