Walmart gets serious about healthcare clinics
Bentonville, Ark. -- A pioneer in retail clinics has joined the nation’s largest retailer.

Sandra Ryan has accepted a position with Walmart to lead the chain’s Care Clinic business, Drug Store News has learned, in a move that suggests the world's largest retailer is ready to make some major moves in the retail clinic space.
Soupman taps retail vet as CEO
New York -- The brand that ‘Seinfeld’ made famous has tapped a retail vet as CEO.

Soupman announces that Jamieson Karson has joined the company as CEO and chairman. Karson is the former CEO and chairman of Steven Madden.

During his tenure at Steve Madden, Karson is credited with stabilizing the company and expanding the company's footprint into the global retail and wholesale markets. After Steve Madden, he was a partner at Lightship Partners, a retail consulting firm.

GameStop encourages employees to hit the books

New York -- GameStop wants its employees to pursue a higher education.
Holiday hiring starting early

Indianapolis -- The calendar may read August, but Hhgregg is already looking to firm up its holiday hiring.

The appliance, electronics and furniture retailer announced it is hiring 550 full-time and part-time in-store sales associates. As the holiday shopping season continues to tiptoe earlier into the calendar year, Hhgregg said it is looking to have their stores fully staffed and associates trained and ready to greet shoppers getting a jump on the holiday rush.
Report: Abercrombie decides on-call isn’t cool

New Albany, Ohio – Specialty chain Abercrombie & Fitch Inc. tries to stay on the edge of cool, and has reportedly decided that on-call shifts are no longer what the cool retailers are doing. According to the Associated Press, Abercrombie will end its requirement for employees in New York stores to be available for short-notice shifts by the end of the year.
C-suite changes at Sprouts Farmers Market

Phoenix — Sprouts Farmers Market has a new CEO.

The company announced a leadership succession plan, effective Aug. 6, whereby CFO Amin Mereda has been appointed CEO. Doug Sanders, currently president and CEO, ascends to the role of executive chairman.
Dollar General vet returns

Goodlettsville, Tenn. — A familiar face has returned to head up merchandising at Dollar General.

Dollar General said James W. “Jim” Thorpe had rejoined the company as executive VP and chief merchandising officer, effective immediately. Thorpe previously served as Dollar General’s senior vice president and general merchandise manager from May 2006 until he retired in July 2012.
Former American Airlines CEO joins Home Depot board

Atlanta - Gerard J. Arpey, former CEO of American Airlines, has been named to the board of directors of The Home Depot Inc. Arpey will serve on the company's Finance Committee and its Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee.
Changes at Petco as company names new president

San Diego -- Petco on Thursday today announced several key changes to its leadership team.

In addition to adding chairman responsibilities to CEO Jim Myers' role, the company named Brad Weston as president.

Previously, Weston served as executive VP, chief merchandising officer and president of the company’s Unleashed by Petco unit. The retail veteran joined Petco in October 2011 and led the evolution of the Unleashed by Petco format.
