  • DLC Management launches social media initiative

    Tarrytown, N.Y. -- DLC Management Corp, a national owner and operator of open-air shopping centers, announces Wednesday the launch of a new social media initiative that includes both business-to-business and business-to-consumer social networks.

  • Cree acquires Ruud Lighting

    Durham, N.C. -- Cree has acquired Ruud Lighting, a supplier of LED outdoor lighting, at an estimated net cost of approximately $525 million. The companies’ shared focus on best-in-class LED-based systems has led to thousands of LED lighting installations over the past several years, Cree said.

    Ruud Lighting will continue to be based in Racine, Wis., and will operate as a subsidiary as part of Cree’s lighting business.
     

  • Walmart U.S. CEO Simon rallies veterans to lead 'American Renewal'

    Bentonville, Ark. -- Walmart U.S. President and CEO Bill Simon addressed attendees at the American Legion's 93rd National Convention on Wednesday, telling fellow Americans, veterans and Legionnaires that Walmart would create jobs in the U.S. by hiring more than 15,000 people to work in about 100 new and expanded Walmart stores by fiscal year's end.

  • Tesco pulls out of Japanese market

    London -- Grocery giant Tesco PLC said Wednesday it is pulling out of Japan, which means shuttering 129 small, leasehold-owned stores in the Greater Tokyo area, which employ 4,000 people. The country is the smallest of Tesco’s international retail businesses, and the weakest for sales growth in the 2010-2011 fiscal year.

    “Having made considerable efforts in Japan, we have concluded that we cannot build a sufficiently scalable business,” said Philip Clarke, CEO.

  • A&P selects DemandTec for deal management

    San Mateo, Calif. -- DemandTec said Wednesday that The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. has selected DemandTec’s Deal Management software service on the network.

  • Whole Foods testing Wellness Club concept

    New York City -- Whole Foods Market is testing membership-only Wellness Clubs in select locations, with the initial site in the chain’s store in Dedham, Mass., USA Today reported. Four additional sites are expected to open this fall.

    The company is charging a one-time fee of $199, with monthly membership dues of $45, according to the report, for which members will receive lifestyle evaluations, classes in nutrition, cooking and health and 10% off on 1,000 “better-for-you” foods sold in Whole Foods.

  • U.S. consumer confidence plunges in August

    Washington, D.C. -- A report released Tuesday by the Conference Board said that confidence among U.S. consumers sunk to a two-year low in August, as Americans faced continued unemployment woes and worsening business and economic conditions.

    The Conference Board’s index plunged to 44.5, the weakest since April 2009 and the biggest point drop since October 2008. Economists predicted the August gauge would fall to 52, according to the median forecast in a Bloomberg News survey.

  • Zale and Jessica Simpson team up for jewelry line

    Dallas -- Zale Corp. is teaming up with celebrity Jessica Simpson on an exclusive collection of diamond fashion jewelry. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

    Jessica Simpson, known as a pop music artist, actress and reality TV personality, has become quite successful in the fashion world. Her Jessica Simpson Collection, which sells shoes, clothing, fragrances and other goods, is said to be worth about $1 billion.
