  • Walgreens cuts store closure estimate

    Walgreens Boots Alliance may not have to shutter as many stores in the wake of its planned merger with Rite Aid as it once thought.   
  • Sephora adds new features to Virtual Artist app

    Sephora is adding a new false lash virtual try-on to its Virtual Artist app, as well as a new way to teach beauty with step-by-step virtual tutorials using augmented reality technology.   The launch is the latest in a series of digital enhancements powered by the Sephora Innovation Lab to customize the retailer's expanding beauty experiences.  
  • Supervalu to supply regional grocer

    Supervalu Inc. will serve as primary wholesaler for Indianapolis-based Marsh Supermarkets.   Supervalu has entered into a long-term supply agreement with, and will also provide some professional services to Marsh, which operates approximately 70 Marsh Supermarkets and O’Malia Food Markets stores across Indiana and Ohio. Marsh also operates 38 pharmacy locations.  
  • Petco has growth in store for July

    Petco will not be taking it easy this summer.   As part of a 2016 growth plan which includes 26 new Petco stores and one new Unleashed by Petco location, the specialty pet supplies retailer will open five new Petco stores across the country in July. In addition to the five new stores, the company is also remodeling 12 stores in Seattle, one in San Diego, expanding one store in Heath, Ohio, and relocating one store in Middleburg Heights, Ohio.  
  • Wilder plans image makeover for Connecticut center

    Wilder Companies executives have an image upgrade in mind for the Nod Brook Mall in Avon, Connecticut, a 100,000-sq.-ft. open shopping center they bought this week. The affluent bedroom community outside Hartford boasts an average household income of almost $160,000, according to Wilder, which will recast the center as The Shops at Nod Brook.  
  • Payment issues hit some Etsy sellers

    The July Fourth long weekend was not a happy one for many users of the Etsy online marketplace, which has been hit by lingering transactional problems.   Since July 1, what Etsy has described as a third-party payments processing issue has left thousands of purchases in limbo. A thread in the “Bugs” section of the Etsy online community forum has registered more than 4,000 complaints from buyers and sellers who cannot complete transactions. Etsy users have also been venting their frustrations on Twitter and Reddit.

  • In-store technologies: Separating the ‘cool’ from the ‘creepy'

    Smart mirrors are a ‘cool’ in-store technology, but facial recognition software is another story entirely.      Those are among the findings of a new survey by RichRelevance, a provider of omnichannel personalization technology. The company surveyed more than 2,000 U.S. and U.K. consumers about how technology can impact their in-store shopping experience, highlighting the  differences between what shoppers thought was ‘cool’ and ‘creepy’.  
  • Amazon Books headed to Hudson Yards

    Amazon Books is headed to Hudson Yards, the massive redevelopment underway on New York’s west side, according to a report in the New York Post.   The online retailer debuted its bricks-and-mortar retail format last November, at University Village in Seattle, and is set to open a second location, in San Diego, this summer. A third location, at Washington Square Mall, in Tigard, Oregon, is expected to open this fall. The Hudson Yards location would be Amazon’s East Coast beachhead.
