  • Get schooled on where college students shop

    OBERLIN, Ohio — Walmart and Target are the top go-to retail stores for college students, according to a new study.

  • Emcor to acquire USM

     Norwalk, Conn. -- Construction and engineering company Emcor Group Inc said it agreed to buy privately owned USM Services Holdings Inc from Transfield Services Ltd. for $255 million in cash to broaden its position in the facilities and maintenance services business.

  • Subway to open 2,000 North American locations in 2011

    Milford, Conn. -- Subway Restaurants said Friday that more than 2,000 franchisees are actively searching for locations slated for 2011 openings.

    In order to reach its development goals, the chain said that a contingent of Subway representatives will be manning the brand’s booth at the International Council of Shopping Centers’ RECon convention, May 23 to 25, in Las Vegas.

  • Kirkland’s income falls on higher expenses

    Nashville, Tenn. -- Kirkland's said Friday that its first-quarter net income fell 51% stung by higher expenses, increasing freight costs and competition over price. Its results, however, exceeded Wall Street's expectations.

    The company earned $3.2 million for the period ended April 30, down from $6.5 million, a year earlier.

    Total operating expenses rose to $29.7 million from $26.7 million.

  • JCPenney to increase Energy Star certifications to 400 stores

    Plano, Texas -- JCPenney Co. announced that it will up its participation in the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star program to 400 stores by the end of 2013. Energy Star certification is awarded to buildings that rank within the top 25% of similar commercial buildings nationwide by meeting strict energy performance levels set by the EPA.

    JCPenney has a companywide goal to reduce facility energy use 20% by 2015.

  • Ann Taylor tops estimates, raises view

    New York City -- Ann Inc., the operator of Ann Taylor and Loft stores, posted a 21% increase in its fiscal-first-quarter earnings and raised its full-year sales estimate.

    For the quarter ended April 30, Ann reported a profit of $27.3 million, up from $22.62 million in the prior-year quarter.

    Sales rose almost 10% to $523.6 million, but margins slipped to 57.3%, against 59% last year. Same-store sales rose 7.8%.
     

  • Hibbett net income soars in Q1

    BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A few days after Dick's Sporting Goods reported higher-than-expected earnings, Hibbett Sports posted even more impressive sales and income growth. Hibbett Sports reported that net sales for the first quarter increased 10.4% to $203.7 million compared with $184.5 million for the same period last year. Comparable-store sales increased 6.8%.
