New York -- In a big loss for American Express, Costco Wholesale Club will no longer accept American Express cards at its U.S. stores starting on March 31, 2016, ending a 16-year-old exclusive relationship with the credit card giant. Costco is one of the few big U.S. retailers that accepts only American Express cards, with by Visa Inc., MasterCard Inc. and Discover Financial Services cards not accepted at its stores.

Washington, D.C. – As the Pacific Maritime Association prepares to shut down U.S. West Coast ports from Feb. 13-16, the National Retail Federation (NRF) is issuing a public statement asking for direct White House intervention.

Minneapolis – Target Corp. has agreed to pay almost $4 million in fines for overcharging customers at stores in Contra Costa, Sonoma, Marin, Santa Cruz and Fresno counties in California. The payment will settle a complaint filed by the San Diego City Attorney’s Office in conjunction with the district attorneys of the affected counties.

The complaint said that Target charged consumers more money at the cash register than was advertised on price tags in aisles, and also misrepresented the weight of packaged food.

Seattle - A significant increase in selling, general and administrative expenses, as well as higher marketing expenses, helped plunge net income at pure play retailer Zulily Inc. below Wall Street expectations during the fourth quarter of fiscal 2014. Net income fell 15% to $10.88 million from $12.75 million.

Sidney, Neb. - Incremental expenses related to the relocation of a distribution center in Winnipeg, Canada, as well as increased promotional and advertising spending, helped drive down Cabela’s Inc. net income 2% to $78.6 million from $80.1 million in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2014.

Total revenue increased 7% to $1.3 billion, from $1.2 billion. Although increased retail store revenue fueled total revenue growth, same-store sales fell 5.5%.

Phoenix – The $8.7 billion private equity acquisition of PetSmart Inc. that was announced in December 2014 is one step closer to fruition. Argos Merger is providing a $1.9 billion senior note unsecured offering to finance the purchase.

Minneapolis – Technology lovers who fall in love have a new online wedding registry option. On Feb. 16, Best Buy Co. Inc. will launch the Best Buy Wedding Registry.

Couples can create and manage their registry online or through the Best Buy mobile app. By early April, in-store kiosks in all Best Buy locations will help registrants and gift-givers view and print wedding registry lists. Couples will also have the option of syncing their registry with MyRegistry.com and TheKnot.com.

Memphis, Tenn. - Fred's Super Dollar is enhancing its POS marketing efforts. The retailer has joined inStream's retailer network of 38,000-plus stores offering POS and digital marketing programs.  

The Fred's/inStream partnership will reach more than 2.2 million shoppers across 600 stores each week with targeted offers, on the "front" of their consumer receipts which will feature eye-catching graphics.

Apple’s new mobile wallet solution, Apple Pay, was introduced to great fanfare as shoppers headed into the 2014 holiday shopping season armed with the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus. Apple was quick to proclaim its success with one million activations in the first 72 hours – instantly vaulting it to the top, according to Tim Cook.  

New York -- Retail sales fell 0.8% in January, more than forecast, amid smaller receipts at gas stations due to plummeting fuel costs and declines at apparel and sporting goods stores, according to the U.S. Commerce Department. It was the second straight month of decline, suggesting consumers still remain cautious when it comes to spending. Sales excluding automobiles, gasoline, building materials and food services edged up 0.1%, also less than forecast, after being flat in December.
