  • At Home Depot meeting, a variety of voices

    ATLANTA — Customer service, glue traps and corporate democracy were among the issues on the table at a wide-ranging Home Depot annual shareholders meeting in Atlanta Thursday.

     Home Depot’s shareholders approved the company's recommendations for its board of directors and executive pay structure. And it defeated a shareholder proposal regarding shareholder control of corporate political gifts.

  • Staples Europe announces exec changes

    Framingham, Mass. -- Staples Europe announced Thursday that it has appointed Amee Chande to managing director UK retail & direct and Andrew Gabriel to director of technology and services European retail.

    Chande will have overall responsibility for Staples retail and delivery businesses in the United Kingdom, a key market for the company. Chande joined Staples in 2009 as senior VP strategy, responsible for developing and driving the company’s growth agenda.

  • Santa Monica Place launches gift card program that benefits schools

    Open-air shopping destination Santa Monica (Calif.) Place has launched a new gift card partnership to benefit local public schools. One dollar from the purchase fee for every Santa Monica Place Gift Card and GIVE Green Gift Card sold at the center will go to the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation.

  • West Marine to open 50,000-sq.-ft. superstore in Fort Lauderdale

    Watsonville, Calif. -- West Marine will open the biggest store in the company's history, a 50,000-sq.-ft flagship in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Due to open by yearend, the store will be twice as big as the company's current largest location and will be focused on serving both local and seasonal boating customers.

  • Macy's May sales rise 7.4%

    CINCINNATI — The day before most retailers report monthly results, Macy’s said Wednesday that same-store sales climbed 7.4% in May and total revenue rose 8.5% to $1.94 billion.

    The department store operator also raised its expectations for the second quarter, saying it now expects second quarter same-store revenue to climb about 5%. Its prior forecast called for an approximately 4% increase.

  • Roundy’s Supermarkets selects Grandville Printing for digital in-store signs

    Grand Rapids, Mich. -- Roundy's Supermarkets has signed a contract with Grandville Printing Co. (GPC) to digitally print in-store shelf tags and price signs every week.

    Roundy's has fully deployed the GPC Nexgen program where shelf edge tags and price signs are delivered bursted and boxed in planogram order by aisle for each individual store.
