    New York City -- A.S. Cooper & Sons, one of Bermuda’s signature retailers, continues its recent trend towards modernization and innovation by upgrading its POS retail system. The chain has gone went 'live' with JDA Solutions’ point of sale/retail management system.

  • Urban Outfitters Q1 net income dips; on track to open 50 to 55 stores

    Philadelphia -- Urban Outfitters reported Monday that profit for the first quarter declined more than expected, posting net income of $39 million compared with $53 million a year earlier.

    However, revenue topped Wall Street's estimates, as the operator of Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Free People and Terrain banners saw sales rise 9% to $524 million. Same-store sales fell 5%. But direct-to-consumer (catalogs and online) same-store sales increased 15%.

  • Report: Asda to debut George stores

    Belfast, Ireland -- A report in the Belfast Telegraph Tuesday said that Wal-Mart-owned supermarket chain Asda has released plans to open its first George stores overseas as it looks to turn the fashion label into a global retail brand.

    The chain has set up a team at George's Lutterworth, Leicestershire base to explore entering into franchise arrangements for the first time. According to the report, George expects to announce its first partner in the Middle East in the next few months, followed by store openings in the first half of 2012.

  • By George, Asda looking to franchise apparel brand overseas

    LONDON — Wal-Mart Stores' Asda division Asda confirmed that it was exploring opportunities to franchise its George at Asda range in markets overseas.

    The company expects to announce its first overseas franchising partner in the next few months with the intention of establishing a small number of pilot stores in the Middle East in the first half of 2012.

    George currently accounts for around half of Asda’s general merchandise sales and is already a growing global brand through Walmart stores in seven countries worldwide, the company reported.

    Consumers remain skittish. Despite recent positive economic signs, the latest Gallup U.S. consumer spending report shows that routine daily expenditures at restaurants, gas stations and online stores are still down from their 2008 highs, falling to $58 per day in January 2011, versus $97 for the same month three years earlier.

  • Nordstrom Q1 income surges 25%; rolling out mobile checkout devices

    Seattle -- Nordstrom reported Thursday that its first-quarter net income rose 25% on improved revenue. But the company lowered its full-year outlook to reflect the impact of its acquisition of private-sale website HauteLook.

    Nordstrom said it earned $145 million for the quarter that ended April 30, up from $116 million in the same quarter last year. (The figure includes a charge related to the HauteLook acquisition.) Revenue increased 12% to $2.23 billion. Same-store sales were up 6.5%.
