  • Conn’s Q1 tops estimates; will open 17-20 stores

    The Woodlands, Texas – Conn’s Inc. exceeded Wall Street estimates with both its net income and net sales performance during the first quarter of fiscal 2014. In addition, the retailer said it plans to open 17-20 new stores while closing 10 existing stores during the full fiscal year.

  • ROIC to acquire Fallbrook Shopping Center in California

    San Diego - Retail Opportunity Investments Corp. (ROIC) has entered into a binding contract to acquire Fallbrook Shopping Center for $210 million in cash. The property is located in West Hills, California, and has approximately 1.12 million sq. ft. of gross leaseable area, of which 98% is currently leased.

    ROIC expects to close the transaction during the second quarter of 2014.

  • Survey: Consumers spend less on Father’s Day than Mother’s Day

    Austin, Texas - More people buy Mother's Day gifts than Father's Day gifts (86%, compared to 77%). According to the 2014 Father’s Day Shopper Trend report from RetailMeNot, survey respondents say they spend $61 on Father's Day gifts and $68 on Mother's Day gifts.

  • Sears testing ‘Connected Solutions’ in-store shops in three locations

    Hoffman Estates, Ill. -- Sears is testing “Connected Solutions” experiential shops that bring together smart, or connected, home and personal automation products. The 1,700-sq.-ft. shops are being piloted in three Sears locations in the Chicago area, including Woodfield Mall, Schaumburg, Illinois; and Oakbrook Center, Oakbrook, Illinois.

  • Canadian exit hits Big Lots profit

    Columbus, Ohio – Expenses related to exiting its Canadian operations substantially reduced net earnings for Big Lots Inc. in the first quarter of fiscal 2014. Compared to the first quarter of fiscal 2013, net income fell 90% to $3.35 million from $32.33 million.

    Net sales rose 1% to $1.28 billion, from $1.27 billion. Same-store sales rose 0.9%. Big Lots forecasts same-store sales growth of 1%-3% in the second quarter of fiscal 2014, and 1%-2% in the full fiscal year.

     

  • Logility acquires MID Retail

    Atlanta -- Logility, a leading supplier of collaborative solutions to optimize the supply chain, announced its acquisition of privately held MID Retail, Inc., an Indianapolis-based provider of retail allocation and merchandise planning solutions.

  • Consumer spending dips 0.1% in April

    Washington, D.C. – U.S. consumer spending fell by $8.1 billion, or 0.1%, in April 2014. It was the first monthly decline in consumer spending since April 2013 and followed a 1% increase of $117.6 billion the previous month.

  • Genesco net earnings slip in Q1

    Nashville, Tenn. – Genesco Inc. reported net earnings of $13.97 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2015, down 3% from $14.41 million in the same quarter of the prior fiscal year. A jump in selling and administrative expenses drove the net earnings decline.

    Meanwhile, net sales rose 6% to $629 million, from $591 million. Same-store sales grew 1%. Genesco expects a low-single-digit same-store sales increase for the full fiscal year.
