  • Bon-Ton net loss grows in Q1

    York, Pa. – Net loss at The Bon-Ton Stores Inc. widened to $34.1 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2015, from $31.5 million in the same quarter the prior year. Increased cost of sales and depreciation and amortization helped increase net loss.

    Total sales inched up to $610.9 million from $607.5 million, while same-store sales increased 0.8%. E-commerce sales increased at a double-digit rate due to a higher conversion rate.

  • Target hits the bulleye in first quarter

    Target’s efforts to revamp its product assortment are apparently paying off for the company, which reported a nearly 52% surge in first quarter profit on strong sales of fashion, home and beauty products.

    The company posted a profit of $635 million for the three months that ended May 2. Same store sales rose 2.3%, beating forecasts. Revenue rose 2.8% to $17 billion. Online sales rose nearly 38%.

  • Smart & Final launches new branding campaign

    Commerce, Calif. -- Smart & Final launched a new branding campaign, which will place the ampersand ("&") -- already in the 144-year old company's name -- front and center to showcase the company's relationship with both its customers and the communities it serves.

  • Lowe’s Q1 profit, sales up but miss Street

    Mooresville, N.C. -- Lowe's Companies reported an increase in profit and sales in the first quarter but its performance in both metrics fell short of Wall Street estimates. The home furnishings retailer reported its results a day after rival Home Depot reported earnings and revenue that topped estimates.

    Lowe’s net income increased 7.8% to $673 million in the quarter ended May 1, from $624 million a year earlier.

    Net sales rose 5.4% to $14.13 billion. Total same-store sales were up 5.2%.

    Waban, Mass. -- Supermarket companies Hannaford and Publix took the top spots in the 2015 Temkin Effort Ratings, which rates how easy or difficult companies are to work with. The ratings examine 293 companies across 20 industries.

  • H&M opens largest store to date, 63,000-sq.-ft. space in Manhattan’s Herald Square

    New York -- Swedish fast-fashion giant Hennes & Maurtiz AB (H&M) on Wednesday unwrapped its largest store in the world, in New York City’s Herald Square. The 63,000-sq.- store, which is located across from Macy’s, has a custom illuminated store front that wraps around 33rd Street, 34th Street and 6th Avenue. It is the retailer’s 13th store in New York City.

  • Staples first quarter profit drops 39%

    Traffic problems continued to hinder Staples in the first quarter even as the company awaits regulatory approval of its merger with Office Depot.
