Deerfield, Ill. -- Walgreens said Friday it has surpassed 1 million fans on Facebook, and has also integrated its network of more than 7,700 drug stores through mobile platforms on Facebook Places and Foursquare.

Walgreens said it has become the chain drugstore retailer with the largest following on Foursquare, while developing a growing presence on other social communities, including Twitter and YouTube.

Plano, Texas -- Inland Western, based in Oak Brook, Ill., said that its Shops at Legacy, in Plano, Texas, has partnered with Smart Choice to launch a mobile personal shopping assistant app. The new app features product information, a customizable shopping experience and a “Men’s Corner,” which includes drink specials, sports game listings and gift ideas.

Indianapolis -- More than half of U.S. consumers who’ve made at least one purchase on their smartphone have done so based on a marketing message delivered via mobile email, according to a new study by ExactTarget.

While calling, texting and emailing remain the most frequent daily activities for smartphone users, the study found consumers are increasingly using their smartphones for more than the basics.

NEW YORK — Macy's announced that its "Macy's Chefs A-Go-Go" food truck tour will kick off in Miami on June 28. The first-ever tour will feature a chef from Macy's Culinary Council at each stop. MCC chefs include Cat Cora, Todd English and Marcus Samuelsson.

Walmart may have been slow to embrace the online space in the mid 90’s when dot-com fever first heated up, but it isn’t making the same mistake the second time around as the digital world undergoes the mobile and social revolution.

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — Staples announced that it has launched a mobile version of its website. The M.Staples.com mobile site is optimized for smartphones and features enhanced product ratings and reviews, one click to an ink and toner finder, a Staples retail store locator with automatic GPS, store inventory lookup and enhanced on-site search, including an auto-suggest feature, the company reported. 

Staples' new mobile website also allows users to share product reviews and become a fan of Staples on Facebook, or follow Staples on Twitter.

The enormity of the Chinese e-commerce opportunity was mentioned last week by Wan Ling Martello at Walmart’s shareholders meeting, when the COO of global e-commerce described how China’s online market is projected to quadruple to $300 billion in five years. Walmart obviously wants to be part of that growth and looked to shorten its learning curve earlier this year by acquiring a minority stake in fast growing online grocer Yihaodian.

A Wild West atmosphere remains evident in the world of e-commerce as brands, once reluctant to sell directly to customers online for fear of alienating retailers, are now experimenting with novel ideas that just a few years ago would have been unthinkable.

For example, Ad Age this week chronicles an example involving Procter & Gamble selling products direct to consumers on its Facebook fan pages for several leading brands such as Tide, Gillette, Olay, Gain, CoverGirl, Luvs and Febreze.

Express is launching a store design concept created by the hot Japanese design firm Wonderwall. The new format, debuting at King of Prussia Mall, King of Prussia, Pa., has a modern, sophisticated look and combines elements of refined chic with more unconventional materials. It also introduces social media into Express’ store environment. The same concept is sets to launch at Kenwood Towne Center in Cincinnati.
