  • Village Super Market Q4 adjusted profit rises

    Springfield, N.J. -- Village Super Market, which operates 28 supermarkets under the Shop Rite name in the Northeast, reported Thursday that net income for the fourth quarter was $8.8 million, an increase of 14% after backing out the extra week in last year’s fourth quarter.

    Without the adjustment, net income fell from $8.9 million a year earlier.

    Revenue rose nearly 1% to $345 million from $342.7 million. After excluding the extra week, revenue increased nearly 8%. Same-store sales rose nearly 8% excluding the extra week.

  • Survey: Two out of three U.S. consumers surveyed want self-service options when shopping

    Duluth, Ga. -- A majority of U.S. consumers believe that self-service technologies such as self-checkout and kiosks improve the store experience, with almost half of younger shoppers preferring to use self-checkout in stores, according to a new survey by The NPD Group for NCR Corp.

  • Walgreens’ September sales up 5.4%

    Deerfield, Ill. -- Walgreen Co. said Wednesday that its sales increased 5.4% in September, to $5.95 billion from $5.65 billion in the year-ago period.

    Pharmacy revenue rose 4.6%, while front end sales were up 5.1%.

    Same-store sales rose 3.1%. Wall Street analysts were expecting growth of 4.6%.
     

  • NRF survey: Retailers use background checks for safety

    Washington, D.C. -- A new survey released Tuesday by the National Retail Federation found that nearly all retailers rely on background checks to keep their customers, and themselves, safe.

    The survey, completed by retail executives from 96 of the nation’s leading department stores, mass merchants, discounters, drug stores, grocery stores and restaurants, examined retailers’ use of background screenings during the application and employment process.

  • Cole and RED form joint venture

    Phoenix -- Cole Real Estate Investments announced the formation of a joint venture with RED Development to focus on future acquisition opportunities, recapitalizations and note purchases in the retail real estate sector. 

  • Regency Centers acquires Tech Ridge Center

    Austin, Texas -- Jacksonville, Fla.-based Regency Centers said it closed on the acquisition of Tech Ridge Center, an 187,529-sq.-ft. neighborhood shopping located in Austin, Texas, on Sept. 26.  

    Built in 2001, Tech Ridge Center is anchored by an 84,352-sq.-ft. H-E-B alongside national retailers including Office Depot, Petco, Subway and Massage Envy.  The center is 93% occupied.

  • Supervalu commits $1M to youth sports sponsorship

    EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Supervalu announced that it has committed $1 million to sponsor 1,542 youth sports teams in markets where its Acme, Albertsons, Cub Foods, Farm Fresh, Jewel-Osco and Shaws/Star Market stores operate. 

  • Five Guys Burgers and Fries to open at Vista Village

    Vista, Calif. -- Jacksonville, Fla.-based Regency Centers said it has leased retail space in Vista, Calif., at Vista Village to Five Guys Burgers and Fries. 

    The restaurant leased 2,611 sq. ft. of retail space at the 232,543-sq. ft. Vista Village, which is anchored by Krikorian Premiere Theatre and Frazier Farms.
