  • Roundy's to sell 18 Rainbow stores

    Minneapolis -- Grocery retailer Roundy’s said it had entered into definitive agreements to sell 18 Rainbow stores in the Minneapolis/St. Paul market to a group of local grocers, including Supervalu.

    The sale price is $65 million, and Roundy’s said it is seeking buyers for a remaining nine Rainbow stores so that it can fully exit the Minneapolis/St. Paul market.

    The transaction is expected to close during the third quarter of this year.

  • Supervalu to acquire Rainbow Stores in the Twin Cities

    Supervalu, the owner of Cub Foods, along with four Twin Cities-based independent grocery retailers, have each entered into definitive agreements to acquire select Rainbow Foods grocery stores. In total, they agreed to acquire 18 Rainbow grocery stores, including 13 Rainbow pharmacies and three Rainbow liquor stores in Minnesota.

  • Easter holiday shift affects Weis Markets in first quarter

    The timing of the Easter holiday, which was observed in last year’s first quarter but this year’s second, affected Weis Market’s first quarter results for the period ended March 29.

    The company's sales for the quarter increased 0.6% to $687.1 million while its comparable store sales for the quarter decreased 1.3% compared to the same period a year ago.

  • Whole Foods’ record revenue increase not enough for Street

    Despite the Easter holiday shift, Whole Foods reported second-quarter revenue of $3.32 billion, a record increase of 10% from the prior-year quarter. But the record was not enough for Wall Street, which expected $3.34 billion.

    The company’s earnings per share of 38 cents for the quarter also came in below expectations of 41 cents per share.

  • Whole Foods Market posts flat Q2 profit amid higher costs; cuts outlook

    Austin, Texas -- Whole Foods Market on Tuesday reported a profit for its fiscal second quarter that fell short of Wall Street expectations. The grocery store operator also cut its outlook for the year.

    For the quarter ended April 13, Whole Foods earned $142 million, unchanged from last year, amid higher expenses.

    Revenue rose to $3.32 billion, short of the $3.34 billion Wall Street expected. Same-store sales rose 4.5%, hurt by the shift of Easter to the third quarter this year.

     

  • Kroger switching to eco-friendly liquid natural gas in 40 trucks in Oregon

    Cincinnati -- The Kroger Co. announced that it will be the first in Oregon to deploy a fleet of heavy-duty trucks that run on Liquid Natural Gas (LNG). The 40 trucks will replace 40 diesel trucks currently in use, and are expected to start making store deliveries in the Portland metropolitan area by the end of 2014.

    The use of natural gas fuel not only reduces operating costs for vehicles, but also reduces greenhouse gas emissions up to 23% in medium- to heavy-duty vehicles.

  • New Kroger shopping center for Castle Hills, Texas

    Lewisville, Texas — Kroger and retail developer Cencor Realty Services will break ground on a 123,000-sq.-ft. Kroger Marketplace this week. Slated to open in the first quarter of 2015, the new Kroger will anchor a community-regional-draw center located in the 2,500-acre master-planned community of Castle Hills, Texas.

    In addition to the Kroger Marketplace, the center’s first phase will include 40,000 sq. ft. of in-line retail space and several ground sites for national restaurant concepts that have not been announced yet.

  • WinCo to open distribution center in Phoenix

    Boise, Idaho — WinCo Foods LLC has announced that it will begin shipping from its new distribution center in Phoenix. With more than 900,000 sq. ft., the new center will service 19 WinCo Foods stores located in Arizona, Southern Nevada and Southern California, a little more than half of the facility’s capacity.

  • Publix Q1 profit up 4.8%

    Lakeland, Fla. -- Publix reported that its profit rose 4.8% to $493.7 million in its first quarter.  

    Sales increased 4.1% to $7.8 billion, with a 4% increase in same-store sales.  

    Publix estimated that its sales were negatively impacted by 1.3% due to the later Easter this year.  

    Effective May 1, Publix’s stock price increased from $30.15 per share to $32.50 per share. Publix stock is not publicly traded and is available only to current Publix employees and members of its board of directors.
